I am new to reloading and is trying to decide on my first load data to use. I have been trying to get hold of some Accurate No7, but it has been very difficult. Locally I found some Autocomp, which has some load data for 40S&W.

The bullets I have on order are 40/10mm X-Treme 165gr plated RNFP. Following is the load data for 165 GR. BERB FP.

Code:
Winchester	AutoComp	.400"	1.125" 6.3	1,051	25,900 PSI 7.0	1,171	33,300 PSI

Can anybody give me some advise on how close the above load data will fit the X-Treme 165gr bullets, and what type of adjustments should be made.

Thanks in advance for any advise.

What source is the data from? Assuming the data is from a reliable source, I'd say their wouldnt be to much adjusting that you'd have to do. Start low and dont get em to hot. You might want to administer a"plunk" test to make sure the OAL works. Somebody please correct me if Im wrong. If they are round nose you may end up with a longer OAL. If flat point, I would think it would be pretty near apples to apples. Welcome to THR.

I can't find any supportive data with that weight bullet and powder, but I haven't performed a full search.

But assuming, as Potatohead stated, that the data is from a reliable published source, is intended for plated, then you should be just fine.

As for OAL, I always use the barrel / magazine to determine what best suits my firearm. Also, if the plunk test reveals that your oal needs to be shorter, then be aware that, that will raise pressures.

The source is from the online Hodgdon site which lists the "165 GR. BERB FP" bullet. I am just trying to figure out if the BERB FP corresponds with the 165 GR. Xtreme RNFP. They are both plated bullets, so my concern is more the 6.3 starting and 7.0 max powder. I will definitely use the "plunk" test to make sure the COL of 1.125 is correct.

Thanks for the response.

What is RNFP? I thought a bullet was either RN or FP.

If both are plated, and the data is for plated, they would be interchangeable. If one had a hollow base (not sure if that's the technical name), then the data could differ somewhat.

RNFP is Round Nose Flat Point. If you look at the Western Powders load data guide you will see they have RNFP listed under bullet abbreviations. It seems like Rainier and Xtreme have the RNFP type bullets. The hollow base or concave type bullets is something I will probably stay away for now until I have more experience or if I have the exact match in the load data. Thanks again for your response.

RNFP is Round Nose with tip cut off. TCFP is Cone Nose with tip cut off

As to OP, X-Treme plated RNFP is comparable to Berry's plated RNFP and I use Hodgdon's load data for Berry's bullets (BERB) for both plated bullets

Comparison picture below shows Berry's/X-Treme 165 gr RNFP

Yes.

Berry's MFG uses RS - Round Shoulder (RNFP) and FP - Flat Point (TCFP).

X-Treme uses RNFP

Rainier Ballistics uses RNFP and FP (TCFP)

bds, Thanks for the explanation. I had a look on the Berry's site and they only list FP now. It doesn't look like the FP bullets started with a round nose, so maybe there is a difference between FP and RNFP.

I have used Extreme 124 gr 9MM and 165 grain 40 SW and Hogdon data for HP38 and CFE with Berry FP with great success.

Extreme does not use FP description for any bullets...they always say RNFP

I think a COL of 1.125 is probably correct for Xtreme 165 gr. RNFP since I have some remanufactured 165 gr RNFP ammo from Freedom Ammunition which uses Xtreme bullets (same company) The measured COL goes from 1.119 to around 1.127. Using a COL of 1.125 should probably work based on all the data I have seen so far. Now I just need to decide on the starting gr. for my Xtreme 165 gr. RNFP bullets.

Thanks for the confirmation. For now I am planning to use the following Hodgdon load data for my Xtreme 40/10 165gr RNFP bullets, using AutoComp:

165 GR. BERB FP
Winchester AutoComp .400" 1.125" 6.3 1,051 25,900 PSI 7.0 1,171 33,300 PSI
