Saw one of these at the gun store today. WHat is the difference in the XD3.8 and the other XDs? Does the 3.8 have something the other XDs don't? Or vice versa?

There is no XD with a 3.8" barrel. What you saw was an XDM.

The XDMs have a match grade barrel, extended magazine release, bigger slide serrations, higher capacity, more ergonomic grips, and you don't need to pull the trigger to field strip it.

Up until a few weeks ago, XDMs came in 4.5" only, and only in 9mm and .40S&W.

The 3.8" XDM comes only in 9mm.

Are regular XDs still in production or is everything now a XDM or XD3.8? What is the capacity difference in the XDM vs the XD? Are all the subcompacts are XDs?

It has a 3.8" bbl and different slide serrations. It is based on the XDm so it has the features of the XDm except for the short list of differences I listed above. Springfield's site lists the differences between the XDm and the XD.

Click on the red links below the picture of the gun so see the differences between the XDm and XD.

XDm holds 16+1 rounds of 40s&w and 19+1 rounds of 9mm. XDm is all full size guns while XD has full size, compact, and subcompact. Go to the link Echo9 gave you and you can find capacity for whatever size XD you are comparing.

are the XDm 3.8's out yet? I havent seen them in any stores around here and not many people have heard of them. I am very interested in this gun for a 2010 purchase.

shorter barrel 3.8" actually, which is suposed to be better/ easier to conceal however the overall height of the 3.8 is the same as the m's. the height in my experince is what is the hardest part to conceal, barrel lenght has little effect on concealability. i will pass.

I like the concept, but the XD-M grip is a little too big around to suit me. I like the grip on the regular XD.

I handled one last week and was impressed with the balance. Moreso than I would've thought.

Yes, the height is the same, so hiding it really isn't any easier, aside from a horizontal shoulder holster.

that makes no sense.

the "medium" grip on the XD-m is the SAME circumference as the standard XD. In addition, the XD-m comes with a "small" insert (smaller than XD) and a "large" insert. (same as XD-45)

If you inexplicably find the XD grip circumference to be ideal, yet the XD-m with the medium insert to be too large, simply swap it out for the "small" insert.

the grip diameter didn't really feel much different to me, however i am a xd shooter, not a m shooter. it seemed that the xdm pointed differently and not as naturally as the my standard xd. i am glad that they came out with the m and i was seriously thinking about getting one, but after shooting the xd so much, and not liking the huge size of the m, i will stay with my xd.

Hmm. Why can't it? After all, it is my perception, no one elses.

All I can go by is my perception when I handed an XDm. Perhaps I need to pay more attention to what insert is on the next one I handle, and I will. All I know is the one I handled felt bigger to me.

Maybe it was just "different", but my first reaction to the feel of the grip was negative. I will definitely try to find an XDm 3.9 9MM to get a feel for.

If, the next time I try one out for size, it still feels less comfortable to me than the regular XD, I'll stick with it also.

Still love the concept....
