Well, after posing a few questions here yesterday I was all set to find something in the safe to sell and go out and get myself a SR9-C.:D That was, until I told a friend at work last night and he told me he is planning to get one of the XD9 Compacts.:scrutiny: They look great too and he is pretty sold on it. Would it be too much to ask the experts here the differences between the two pistols and which one they would prefer? If there is an earlier thread on this topic could someone please post a link? I can't find it.:banghead:

Thanks!!!!!!

confused:cuss:

Ruger fit my hand better than the XD. That's what put me in a Ruger instead of the Springfield.

I like the trigger of the Ruger much much better than the trigger on the XD.
I also like the manual safety better than the grip safety.

Good luck.

Ruger is American made.

The SR9C is available with both 10 and 17 round mags. Doesn't have a grip safety. I think simple is the best way to keep a firearm you may have to use to save your life. The Ruger looks better. I have held both and I liked the SR9c better.

Doesn't have a grip safety. I think simple is the best way to keep a firearm you may have to use to save your life.

But the SR9C has a magazine safety, as well has a huge hinged LCI, so that rules out a simplicity argument. Really, if it weren't for these two things, I would be all over an SR9C for concealed carry.

Other than those things, I really want to love the SR9C. My brother has a full-size SR9, and it's a fantasic shooter.

The XD has a very nice trigger, but it breaks too late IMO. Make sure you handle and dry fire them before buying.

Also look at the M&P and Glock 19 (and a G34 smooth trigger to be fair, that part should be added to G19's)

I know that many of these opinions are just subjective, but the reason I went with the SR9c were:

Fit my hand a bit better (this was very close).

I like the Ruger trigger much better.

I like the thumb safety over the grip safety.

I found the "felt" recoil (for me) is MUCH less for my SR9c than it was for my XD9.

Finally my XD9 had the "six o'clock" sight picture standard. I like the POA sight picture for my defensive pistols, I also like that the SR9 comes with adjustable sights.

I have no problems with some of the mentioned SR9 issues. Mag disconnect does not bother me, and its easy to remove if you wish. The LCI is big, its true, and the XD's LCI is better; but the Ruger's doesn't get in the way while holstering/drawing and it doesn't get in the way of the sights so its a wash for me. I've seen reviews where the location/size of the thumb saftey can be inconvenient to those with big hands, but with my smallish hands it's in a perfect place and I can engage/disengage with my normal grip with just a twitch of a thumb, but for some I could see that being a problem.

My REAL issue so far has been that I can't for the life of me find any of the compact mags for sale anywhere that isn't on backorder. That and I don't have the time/money to shoot as many rounds through it as I want to :neener:

Thanks, everyone!! Guess I wasn't far off from popular opinion afterall.;) I know what a mag safety is,:barf: but what does "LCI" mean?

LCI = Loaded chamber indicator.

My XD had a little, inobtrusive hinged piece of metal near the chamber that was slightly raised to indicate that a round was chambered. It was fairly discreet, but obvious if you wanted to look/feel for it.

The ruger has a big ol' red painted FLAG with a description written on top (something like "Chamber loaded when up" or somesuch) that a lot of people don't like, i'm sure you can find a picture on the internet somewhere. It doesn't bother me, personally, but really turns some off.

I like the grip on the xd a little more than the sr9c, but either one is fine. The xd I shot was a sub compact .40 and it had a nice little muzzle flip to it. It still shot great though.

I think both triggers are great on these guns, but I lean more towards the xd for consistent accuracy.

Different safeties. The sr9c magazine safety is easily removable. Took mine out in a minute. I don't mind any of the safeties on the xd.

Looks wise....eh, they both are ugly and decent looking in their own way.

Try and shoot both. You can't really go wrong either way.

That said, I prefer my friend's xd. Could be because I don't have one and just want to own it though. =)

I like both, XD is thicker

Both are great guns. The SR9c is thinner, and that is the main difference you will see. That can affect carrying a bit as well as your grip.

The loaded chamber indicator on the SR9C is designed for "night work"... you can run your hand over top of your gun and tell if it's loaded in the dark without having to spill a round out of your magazine. You may think it's big and ugly, but its the most functional of any in the market for that purpose. There's no mistaking it because of it's location and how it shapes when tilted up.

I've held and dry-fired both, but shot neither. I would (and actually may) get the SR-9c. I personally prefer a manual safety, and don't own a Glock or XD for that reason. Besides that, the SR felt better in my hand.

But the SR9C has a magazine safety

I've heard, but not actually done it myself, that this is very easy to remove. I doubt if they would admit to it, but it almost looks as if the magazine safety was designed to be easily removed by the end user. There are online instructions and videos for removing this, and it looks pretty simple.

I have both and I believe the recoil is less in the Ruger. The LCI is really a non issue since you could file it down so it doesn't bother you or until it doesn't show at all The magazine safety takes maybe a minute to remove. The triggers are different and since my XD has a Powder River Precision it is the superior one. I don't even notice the grip safety on the XD so it should not be a deterrent. The thumb safety on the Ruger is certainly not like a 1911 but is easy enough to use and has a good click to it. The Ruger will probably conceal a little easier.
So to sum it up, I have been no help to you in making a decision, because I believe either one is a good choice.

even though I love my full sized XDM45 to death I'm still going to branch out and get me an SR9C for concealed carry. the SR9c has a lot more safeties which are kind of a pain in the rear but I'd rather be overly safe than have my gun go off in the holster... that said I'm probably going to yank the mag catch out of my SR9

The LCI, and the external safety, is what turns me off from the SR9c.

I would take the XD9 subcompact over the SR9c any day. You can also shoot any mags from other XD9mm with this gun.

The XD has a loaded chamber indicator, which is less obtrusive and has a cock indicator as well. I like the XD's.

the sr9c is actually good looking, and has a slimmer grip frame. the LCI is clownishly large, but the thumb safety is unintrusive and does not need to be used if you don't want it, as the gun is drop safe without it.

on the other hand, an xd45 is sitting next to me as i type this... they just work for me, even though i don't really like them. to me, the xd is like an annoying mediocre looking chick who you, for some reason, have really good sex with

so, it's totally up to you. you can't make a bad choice, either will be reliable and probably outlast you.

I bought a SR9c because after comparing it to the XD compacts, I liked the ergonomics, the shape of the grip frame, and the well thought design features. A completely subjective decision but the SR9c just felt better overall in my hands than the XD compacts did.

Here is another 2 pennies or less of opinion. I too vote for the ruger but have shot neither, just dry-fire. I have never liked the look of the XD just because it looks top heavy and seems to have a higher bore axis which could contribute to people feeling that the Ruger kicks less. I am also not a big fan of grip safeties. that being said, either will make a great CCW and will not disappoint you.
