I just bought a new XD9 sub-compact on Monday. I haven't had a chance to take it to the range yet, but I was reading old posts about them and I have a question about the finish. I've read that the old finish had problems and that they have a new one that does better. How can I make sure what finish I have?
The test cartridge that came with it is dated 11-29-2006. Is that new enough to have the better finish? If not, what do you recommend.
Thanks.

From reading the XD forums, it seems like you are OK. They supposedly changed the meloniting process sometime around April 2006. I think there were some reports of rusting barrels and such with the old finish.

you should be good, buut if you want to check anyway by calling sa than you can. just fyi i have 2 xd's one that was an older model with the old finish and a newer model with the new finish. (melonite) there is wear on the new xd but it isn't getting wear nearly as fast. but wear on a gu really dosen't bother me they will do it no matter what you finish them in!

but i recently sent my xd to sa to get some work done and the armor coated my xd free of charge. the coating looks great and is even, i am very pleased with it and sa as a company! so worse case scenario later down the road when it wears send it in and they will refinish it for you. btw great choice in a handgun! here are pics of mine that i got back yesterday.

Here's how you can tell if you have the old finish...

Get your hands a little sweaty and rack the side a few times. Put the gun away for a week. If when you come back to it there is rust everywhere you touched the gun then you have the old finish.

SA did not realize that they needed to change the finish quickly. Did they start importing XD's in 2001? That's 5 years of a substandard finish.

I bought my first XD in 2003 and sent it to SA for work because the slide would lock back mid-mag. Unlike other reports I've heard about good service from SA, my experience wasn't so great at all. For one, they did not pay shipping both ways. I paid about $50 to ship it to them. Second, they did not redo the finish like I hear so many others say SA did for them. Finally, they didn't fix my premature slide lock issue, they said they couldn't find a problem.

I attempted to cantact SA again recently via email to see if I might be able to finally get my 4 year old gun working for the first time and I haven't heard back after more than a week. I don't know why SA loves everyone else so much and hates me so bad. Every time I hear people talking about their great experience with SA customer service I wonder what company I must be dealing with.

Oh and PS, I love my XD and I feel like I shoot it well. I just wish it was worthy of being a CCW or SD gun instead of an unreliable range gun.

Gameface- most companies are slow to respond to e-mails. I have had no trouble dealing with S.A. with a phone call. They are eager to please.

they will reembersue you up to $50 for the shipping to them. did you send them your reciept?

sorry to hear that you are having trouble with the gun and the company there is one lady in particular there that does customer service, and i don't remember her name but she will square you away in a minute. maybe some of the other members can help you out with her name. call and talk to her.

Interesting...

I did the same thing with my Winchester Model 94, My Marlin Model 25, and my Mossberg 500 and guess what? They rusted too.

But wait, nobody complains about that finish being sub par.

And I could have sworn there was something you could do to stop the rust. What was it...Oh yeah! OIL THEM!

Why in God's green earth would you simply throw a gun you touched, let alone with sweaty hands, someplace for a week without maintaining it.

Kids these days....
