I am about to drink the Kool - Aid. I want the .45. Should I get the 4" or 5" tactical?

I'd advise you to get whichever one would be easiest for you to carry. There's very little difference in balance as far as I've been able to tell, and there's very little (if any) difference in accuracy between a 4" barrel and a 5" barrel. In fact, most people seem to think that the only advantage with the 5" would be that the sights are one inch further apart, making you a bit more accurate, but the guns are essentially the same.

The 4" service or Compact would be great carry guns. The 5" Tactical would be a great range or house gun with the longer bbl and subsequently longer sight radius. Kinda depends on your intended use.

I think that the 5" is significantly more top heavy than the 4", and prefer the 4".

I purchased a XD45 4" a little over a year ago and have carried it daily in a Don Hume concealment holster. I've probably fired 2,500 rounds through it without any problems. It's very simple to clean and maintain and is, in my opinion, the best gun I've ever purchased.

Personally I say get the compact, service. Good balance and the best of both worlds as you can have a Glock 30 sized carry gun or a Glock 21 sized 14 shot full size .45.

Either will do fine. I have the 4" service model. The tactical might be a little tough to carry concealed. If you can get them both.

I have been happy with the 4 inch service model for my XD 45. I put groups on the target that surprise me.

I go for the longest possible barrel length and correspondingly better sight picture that I can comfortably conceal. The hard part to conceal is the grip, not the barrel. (Unless you prefer shoulder or SOB holsters.)

I had the tactical and sold it to get the 4". I think for most purposes the 4" is better, but if you want strictly a range gun or a keep at home gun the 5" has the advantage.

I have an XD9 4 incher and my buddy has the XD9 5 incher. After shooting both I decided that I should've gotten the 5" model. Much less muzzle flip and much more controlable. That extra inch makes a world of difference. I would think the same holds true for the XD45.

I'd go with the tactical for no other reason then it's big and mean looking. If your carrying, then I'd suggest the 4 inch compact.

Just purchased XD 45 4" barrel and have left handed questions

I purchased the XD 45 4" to take a concealed carry course. I'm also left handed and appreciated (if nothing else the jesture) of including clip releases on both sides of the pistol. Now all you right handed folks can benefit from left handed techniques. I fired one two weeks ago and bought one last night. What is the best holster to get for the XDs? Also, does anyone recommend Agrip? The plastic grip on the XD has alot of room for improvement. I am also expecting some cosmetic wear on the slide as reviews I've read talk rather dissapointingly of this drawback compared to the Glock. I prefer the grip angle of the XD over the Glock. My next handgun purchase may very well be a "worth buying" 1911 5" barrel pistol. I have read, or heard good reviews of Kimber, Para-Ordinance, Wilson, Springfield, and Colt. Which is the best? I am drifting towards Colt just for history's sake. I thought about a Springfield with the ambi-safety, but it felt very clunky to me. I would just as soon have the safety only on the left side of the pistol than to deal with the seemingly flimsey aspects of the ambi-safety offered on some models. The capacity of the XD is very impressive to me. It has its drawbacks though...I go through alot more ammo at the range. The XD's a real hoot to shoot.
