Hey ya'll
I picked up an XD9 a little over a month ago, and I hit the 1500rd mark today. The first 800 or so rounds went off without a hitch. However, the last 700 or so, I have had about 10 failures to extract. The round will fire, and the empty casing will get pulled about halfway out of the breech, and it will stay there. The slide will not return to battery, and I am unable to remove the magazine. I end up having to lock the slide back, and remove the empty casing with my hand, then I am able to remove the magazine, re-insert it, and chamber the next round.

It does it will the $9/box Federal from WM, WWB, American Eagle, and UMC. The only ammo it has not happened with is the RWS from WM, but I've only put 2 boxes of it through the gun.

I thought maybe it was an issue with a magazine, so I purchased 2 new Springfield mags, and the problem persists. The extractor looks fine, plenty of tension on it.

Has anyone had an issue like this? I've not contacted Springfield yet, because I wanted to rule out anything stupid that I could be doing... Any ideas?

A burr in the chamber hanging up the case as it exits?
Crud you can't see without removing the extractor?
Junk in the chamber's extractor cutout?

Is the extractor claw still on the case when you discover the malfunction, or is it not engaged?

It sounds like the extractor claw is slipping off the case rim as the case is being withdrawn from the chamber.

The slide appears to continue its rearward motion after the extractor becomes disengaged from the spent case. The recoil spring then attempts to propel the slide into battery, in which the slide begins stripping the top cartridge in the magazine until it collides with the partially extracted case. This is why you have to lock open the slide before you can remove the magazine because the top cartridge has been pushed out of the magazine and the magazine spring is wedging it between the feedramp and spent case. You can't remove the magazine because there's no place for the top cartridge to go when you try to pull it out - the spent case is blocking it's movement.

You may have a chipped or worn extractor or defective extractor spring, or as bigfatdave suggests, some kind of crud that's interfering with its operation.

Another shooter seems to have experienced the same problem as you, see - http://www.mdshooters.com/showthread.php?t=12819

Perhaps it needs a "new style" extractor as there seems to have been extractor problems with the XD9, see - http://www.thehighroad.org/archive/index.php/t-209900.html

Good luck!

Shawn, that exactly describes the problem I have been having. I completely stripped the slide tonight, but I was unable to remove the extractor. I'm no gunsmith, and I really didn't want to break it. I did however clean every little nook and cranny, and there was in fact some crud around the extractor. I wont make it back to the range until late next week, so lets hope that this does the trick. Thanks for the help!

do try to clean out the extractor claw, but with that little amount of rounds through it there should not be an issue like that, that you are describing. i would be prepared to call sa cs they are great and the will square you away. i have never had extraction issues in any of my xd's even my pver 17,500rd xd, through multiple training courses, and many high round count practice sessions. this is obviously a problem, a big one and i hope that you get it resolved soon. please keep us informed.
