The story: The end of the world loometh nigh! My nephew bought a gun (finally) at a show last weekend.

(He's four months older than me, if you were wondering.)

In his usual ponderous manner he sat on the Internet for about three months straight and read everything about everything that has to do with modern polymer pistols and there was much hemming and hawing between the Walther/SW P99, Beretta 90-two, Springfield XD9, and various Glocks.

He had his heart set from reading about stuff on an XD9 tactical (the 5" version) of which there was precisely one example at the entire show that he wound up buying. But not after he passed up an SW99 with night sights that I almost bought if it weren't for the lack of fundage and plenty of others.

The question: He's concerned about parts longevity and given Springfield's... reluctance to cough up replacement parts he's assembling stuff from other sources. He read some danged place that the XD's can and do use springs the same as 1911's and turned to Uncle Zero, the gun expert, to confirm.

Well, hell if I know. Google fails me. Lots of message board posts about things that are XD but not 1911 springs. Springfield claims that the 5" model's spring should never require replacement since it is 'never fully compressed.'

Ideas?
