I'm thinking of selling or trading my Taurus PT1911 and getting something different. One of the front runners is an XDm .45.

If you own one, how do you like it? How's the recoil compared to a 1911?

I've had one for a while. No problems or issues at all. Digests all ammo tried so far including my crappy reloads. Frankly, I prefer a 1911 so the XDM doesn't get used as much as it might otherwise.

As for recoil, being lighter than a full-sized 1911, the felt recoil is a bit higher I guess, but nothing to be concerned about, and really shouldn't be an issue.

I liked the XD .45 Tactical based on the one mag i put through it.
And this is from a Glock fanboy :what:

I sure wouldnt mind an XD Tactical in .45 super!!!
the XDM 5.25 or whatever its called looks cool as well.
my opinion is that the .45 ACP needs at least 4" of barrel, 5 or 6" is better

My XD45 Tactical is my nightstand gun, which means I trust it with my family's lives. It is almost as accurate as my much more expensive 1911s, but has a capacity of 13+1. It has shot everything that I've fed it and has never had a malfunction in thousands of rounds.

I'm sure the XDm is just as good, but I wouldn't pay the extra $100-$200 for it. If the XD fits your hand well, there's no need for the XDm IMHO.

I've shot a pair of XDm .45s, and before I tell you my take, here's how I came by them. I had just shot my XDm .40 and was having issues with the sights - the gun was shooting low and left. A guy came into the range and I told him my issues, and he let me borrow his .45 - it shot like a dream. I had night sights installed, and now my .40 shoots true. This was almost a year ago.

The other day, I was at the range, and I rented their XDM .45. The front of this gun was white, which I assume was just wear on the gun from many repeated firings. It only felt okay, but not great like I remembered, and it, too, was shooting low and right. The XDM also failed to fire on one round - the striker didn't even hit the primer. The glock that I tried that day shot true, I know it's older than the XDM, and it worked flawlessly.

Overall, I'd say the XDm would be a good choice under three conditions: 1) you don't trust the sights from the factory, and either resight it or install new sights. 2) you perform regular maintenance on it (clean/lube it after going to the range, just the basic stuff you would do to any other firearm, nothing excessive). 3) you don't abuse it like a range rental. In comparison, my .40 has worked flawless.

With that said, I should say that range does favor the Glock over the XDm, so I wonder if it prompts them to take better care of the Glocks.

I've had my xdm45 for several months now and have grown more fond of it everytime I take it to the range.

Recoil is very manageable and the gun shoots great. I've changed the sights to FO and it has made a difference.

I bought mine late June 10, so I've had it just over a year now. Recoil is very manageable with factory level loads and my handloads. I also like the factory sights and probably won't change them. The one improvement I have made was to install a Powder River Precision "Match Easy Target" trigger kit. It shortens take up and reset and has no over-travel. Simply put, it now breaks like glass and rivals a good 1911 trigger. My pistol is very accurate. ;)
