Old Sneaky here: I just received An "E" mail from a military source about a New Army semi-auto Sniper System being fielded in Afghanistan, the XM110 SASS. The information was mostly genaric with a noticable lack of details and specs.. Anyone have more info ?? THANX--SNEAKY

dpms is making the sass which is a close example of the miltary version, and they also came out with the mini sass which is .223

btw: sass stands for semi-auto sniper system! just fyi!
 
The contract was for a Semi-Auto Sniper System = SASS.

The contentders were DPMS, KAC, and Remington Rifle division (which was mostly a DPMS built gun).

The KAC gun won, but now there are allegations against Knights about unfairly influencing the competition.

The suppressor on the weapon is an OpsInc, and the optic is a Leupold.
 
I think its a wise choice, but I wonder if it will replace the m24 fully. Seems to give up a little max range compared to the m24, but has more range than the m14 DMR's in use. Id be interested to see how long it takes for these to be issued.

Interesting... especially since Remington now owns Bushmaster.... (and another company owns both)


Question. Why in the name of all that is holy, does a sniper rifle need tactical rails? Rails are for entry guns... not sniper guns. Sheesh.

originally they were wanting a gun that would replace the m24 but as of last i have heard they are not gonna replace it at all and they are gonna use the sass along side the m24 and both will be in the inventory.

as a solider and out of personal preference in about 95% of the ao's in Iraq i would prefer to have the sass.

Easy. Versatility.

During the night shoot, using those rails, he quickly popped on his night vision device, and his IR laser, plopped down prone, and first shot, in the pitch black, nailed an 8 inch gong at 300 meters. Silent ninja death baby. :)

But during the day time, it is kind of pointless to have a giant invisible laser and night vision device on your gun.

Plus the rails are on a free float tube. That gun is a heavy pig, but that is mostly because of the barrel. So they don't really hurt anything, but add a lot of versatility. Which is what the SASS is all about.

As for how it shoots, first time out, putting it on paper, just screwing around, with regular ammo, he did a .6 inch group at 100. And I know it can do better than that with a little work or some better ammo.
 
Versatility is the best answer, and makes a ton of sense. Moreover, everyone knows that our human bullets cannot kill a Ninja Wizard. That is something only the Staff of Agamemnon can do.

What Correia touched on -- the ability to put things a sniper rifle might benefit from in some circumstances on the weapon quickly, but not have to lug them around all the time, etc. Mostly night vision related -- M24s have rails now too.
 
It was pretty eye opening to me to see somebody ring a gong the size of my head from 300 meters in total darkness.
 
Never thought of those Ninja Wizards.... Yeah, I can see that.


Night vision and all that... those are all top rail options, right? So that leaves the side rails for? Hmm... maybe IR illumination.
 
NV on top, IR laser on the side, pressure pad for the IR laser is actually velcroed to the side of the mag well for quick access, bipod on bottom.

Some folks run a visible laser on the gun also, just for the intimidation factor. Apparently the little red or green dot is bad magic in some parts of the world. :)

You could use a flash light on the SASS also, but on such a heavy gun, I'm not seeing the utility of that as much, but I know some truely evil people who could probably think of something.
 
I think the AR with its gas impingment system is inherently more accurate than the White Gas system of the M-14 rifle. Fewer moving parts means more consistent harmonics. I'd dump the bipod though and flute the barrel to make it lighter. Better to carry the weight in a spare magazine or just to lighten the sniper's load.
