I was wondering if anyone had test results showing how the Hornady XTP does in FBI-style geletin testing--in particular through auto glass.

I am loading 180 gr XTPs in my 10mm Auto hoping for something that will give me deep, controlled expansion, and good penetration, even when encountering barriers like heavy clothing or auto glass.

Their +P 200 and 230 gr TAP loads for the .45 ACP seem to be very good choices as well, but I don't hear about them very much.

I have the 180gr .40S&W version loaded in a spare magazine. I've heard wonderful things about them. Here is a page I found which might be helpful:

Here is some of the data on the page for any broken links in the future:

Interesting. What do you think another 200 to 300 fps would do? Hornady claims the 180 gr 10mm/.40 cal XTP was designed to perform up to 1450 fps, so pushing it from 1250 to 1300 is still well within the design parameters, and should perhaps increase expansion--esp through clothed geletin. It would appear the XTP has no shortage of penetration (which I regard as a good thing) so that shouldn't be much of an issue. Am I wrong in these assumptions?

Some guy put them in 10mm handloads, and here's what they got. This is a really interesting page if you're into reloading: http://www.sixguns.com/tests/tt10mag.htm

And here's one with comparison of the 10mm with others, although AFAIK, it's not based on the FBI testing I linked in my original response.

Between those two pages, the 10mm information is pretty clear, especially when you consider they're pushing a 200grain JHP up to 1250fps (yowza!).

As far as putting a 180gr up to 1450 fps..... I haven't done any testing with this velocity on my own, and the only information I can find is where they're putting the 180gr out at 1350fps... and that's really quick. I suppose on a really hot, dry day when the air is real thin, and out of a long barrel, the 1350fps loading could go up to 1400 or 1450, but that's just a guess. Would it increase expansion? I've always subscribed to the theory that at a certain point, the expansion energy is maxed out and the remaining energy is spent on penetration, but that's wholey a matter of perception.
