Ok, it's a 'new' Springfield, but I'm fine with that. I certainly could have bought a similar or better condition surplus from the CMP, but I had handled this one so many times that I had to have this particular rifle. Plus, I may end up doing a repro M1D job on it(ie, having someone competent do it), and I feel better knowing I'm not altering an original receiver. At any rate, I'm a happy boy, been wanting one for years. I'll first get to shoot it this weekend.

Anyone know if there's a net source for markings? I'm curious to know where the parts came from, and I think this stock may be surplus as well. As I understand, these were all built using all surplus parts aside from the receiver and sometimes stocks.

OK, here's a quick pic, I'll take better ones this weekend:

If somebody actually wants some detail pics I suppose I could get those too.

It looks like there is some beautiful grain in that stock begging to be brought to light. Time for some sandpaper and tung oil.

always a good idea to have clean socks while taking a picture :). Nice rifle!

Hey Matt, we should go shooting out at Shiocton once it warms up a bit. I have a new Garand that I haven't had the chance to fire yet. I hope to pick up another one in the next couple months, and have to hit up the CMP for some surplus ammo before it all runs out.

Hey, that sounds like a plan to me. :)

As to the rest, I paid $900, and it's used. Also, no idea what laundry detergent, but these socks are fairly new as well. :p

Very nice, congrats! You said "new", does that mean new manufactured or post-WWII (Korean) vintage? My Springfield is a 1943 model that's been rebarreled, but I love it!

New manufactured. From what I can gather, within the last 10 or so years Denmark sent back a bunch of surplus M1s. For whatever silly reason they couldn't be imported into the US and so went through someone in Canada. They kept all of the receivers and sold off everything else as parts kits. at some unknown to me later date the current Springfield Armory swoops in and buys up all these parts kits. They manufacture receivers and start a run of M1s. They even did some in .308 while they were at it. Up until a year or so ago I could see them on the Springfield website but they took them down at some point so I assume the parts kits ran out and production has stopped. Though writing all this did just make me remember I can go to their website and download the manual, so that's pretty helpful. :)

It doesn't have quite the cool factor of a real all surplus rifle, but some of the parts have certainly been around, and any Garand is pretty doggone cool on it's own, says me. :D

Nice rifle I would not care if it's an SAI M1 they make a nice rifle. I second the advice above go to Walmart and get a quart of boiled linseed oil, fine sandpaper (if needed) and fine steel wool and go at it. You will be amazed at the results. Is that a Boyds stock or USGI?

Not sure, myself. The only markings I've found on the stock are an E or F under the buttplate, a P with a circle around it on the grip facing the trigger guard, and a square with an eagle and stars in it on the left side just below and toward the rear of the receiver.

Well, we know you're not a redneck, because you're wearing socks...clean ones. Oh yeah, nice rifle. Congrats.

What are the markings on the barrel ?(lock the oprod back and look into the hole between the handguard and stock in front of the oprod). You might be lucky and have gotten a VAR barrel if it was a Danish rifle.

I missed out on the last of the Danish VAR barreled Garands from CMP by about a month, but I ended up with a late 60s SA barrel which I've been told is almost as good.

It doesn't seem to have any markings there. Well, there's a short vertical line, but I'm guessing that's not intentional. :p

So I went out on Sunday and fired this rifle(or any Garand) for the first time.

I was not disappointed. Well, I was, but only because I ran out of ammo. I didn't know what to expect at all. The only other centerfire autoloader rifle I've fired is the M-16a2. So I heard recoil wasn't bad at all, especially for a .30-06, but you never know what sort of person that comes from. I myself tend to be a bit recoil shy. At any rate, I discovered there's nothing to worry about here. :)
It's been some time since I've had that much fun shooting a rifle. I think I'm just a semi-auto kind of guy...well, except for looking for brass in the snow. Lucky there's was an ice layer right under some light powdery snow, and I only lost 1 piece of brass.
Because of the snow I didn't get any real workout/testing or anything. Breaking through nearly crotch deep drifts in spots meant I didn't feel like walking back and forth all the way, and only went out to 50yds. The cold made it hard, since my glasses fogged up pretty bad every time I put cheek to stock. Overall though, I think it went allright. No sling, some offhand, most sort of half laying on a spool while sort of crouching in the snow(awkward). Groups were large. Maybe next time I'll calm down a bit and really try and nail em down.

It was too much fun, though. :D

Nice, Matt! I second the comments/questions about the laundry detergent!

Seriously, though, nice report. I am waiting the delivery of a Loaded Standard any week now, and it's reassuring to read your experience. Congratulations and enjoy!

Congrats on the Garand! I just got mine yesterday 1/12. I love it even though it has a slight problem...every round fired causes the trigger guard to flop open. It's at the gunsmith now. I was told by another Garand guy, that this sometimes happens with new stocks and some file work on the wood should fix it. He said it was easily done myself, but the OTHER Garand guy at the range, said not to mess with it myself. So here I wait. It's a beautiful Garand with a TE of less than 2 and matching HRA receiver and barrel with all correct HRA metal. It has a new commercial stock, but I got it for $800.00 soI'm happy. I just want to shoot it some more. I'll post a pic when I get it back.
