I think all of y'all have lost your minds about this being some sort of near fatal accident for the hunters. No, it is not that at all but a well executed suckering in of the boar who is then caught in a precisely timed pincher movement on the part of the hunters.
First note the faux retreat by the hunters and appearance of being intimidated. They have bunched together to give the impression of being scared, inexperienced, and defensively feeble. They act like they are initially too scared to even shoot. This emboldens the boar who presses the charge at the clustered men.
Notice that as the boar approaches, the closest two hunters split at the last moment so as to let the boar pass between them along the trail, leaving the 3rd hunter in khaki as the stop gap part of the triad should the boar actually make it through the gauntlet of the pinch from the first two hunters. This type of precision teamwork and bravery in the face of a determined enemy shows that this is obviously a highly coordinated and honed hunting team.
Notice the hunter who leaves the trail for the lower position. He knows that his buddy only has a pistol, calculates the effects of gravity and angle, and realizes that taking the low position is best suited for himself with a more powerful long gun.
Also notice how quickly the lower hunter is able to go prone in a classic downhill sliding position to take a very quick shot. He is obviously a very skilled hunter with combat experience. It is cool how he uses the boar to shield himself from the second hunter's pistol shots. He does this knowing that there is little chance of overpenetration from the pistol on the boar and knowing the pistolero is a supreme marksman, especially at that range.
The hunter in khaki never yields the trail, in spite of Greybeard's correct notation of his poor footing. Here, a lessor hunter would have been on his butt. He is obviously the least experienced of the trio and why he was held in reserve, but yet still performed in a positive manner.
And finally, notice the pursuit of the lower hunter down the slope, matching the boar stride for stride and tumble for tumble until he is confident that the beast is no longer a threat.
God I live the smell of bacon in the morning!
