Ok... Here's what I like the feel and mechanics of: full size guns, like a single stack 1911, my S&W 686 4", a Glock 17... don't like Officer size 1911's, small revos, or Glock 19's, etc. Didin't care for the feel of a SIG grip, don't like double stack 1911 type grips, BHP's feel really good. I like having a SA, cocked and locked option best, but I'm comfortable with the Glock "just pull it and go."

I'm in the mood for a lightweight 9mm (ala Glock). Considering what I like in grip angles and sizes, would an H&K USP be worth my consideration? I've never held one. Is their grip angle similar to a 1911 or a Glock? Which variant would I want to see for SA C&L type carry? How is their DA pull? Long and heavy?

Lots of subjective questions, I know... any guidance would be appreciated.

USP is okay, very expensive for what you get and I wouldn't go as far as to call one "light". They are very heavy for poly guns.

You might try a Springfield XD 9 in 4 or 5 inch.

If you liked C&L, and the feel of the HP, give a CZ a chance. Nothing works quite as well for me as a CZ.

Unfortunately their lightweights (the PCR and P-01) are decockers. :( The RAMI can be C&L but I think it's smaller than what you're looking for. :D

Thanks, guys. Had an XD-9 once; it wasn't for me. I've felt a CZ; feels very nice, just too heavy for a full hip day, just like the BHP was, and a full 1911 is. I looked at H&K's website; their weight says 1.65 lbs. I think that's about 26 ozs, pretty close to the Glock 17 and a Colt LW Commander. That doesn't sound too heavy, anyway; but the price is a bit up there.

I'll wait patiently for more input...

Shoot or handle an HK and see for yourself.

You seem pretty much like me. I don't like the "fat grip" on the Sig's I've handled. The USP line is "just right" ergonomically. I can't say enough about how good they feel in my hand. I've seen some refer to them as "clunky" which I just don't understand. They are very functional and the controls are within easy reach when you need them.

C&L V1 USP 9 full size or compact. You can't go wrong with either.

The DA pull isn't real long, but its on the heavy side. Which can be easily improved with a set of 10# hammer springs from Wolff. (~$2.95) SA pull is very crisp with a medium reset. I think any trigger takes some getting used to....and the HK trigger is one of those.

Like I said though, there is nothing like shooting / handling one for yourself to be sure before dropping the money on one. HK's do hold their resale value quite well.

Thanks, shoudek. I'm going to try to find one here local that I can get a feel of, just to see. I really liked my Glock, it felt good, but I sold it because I wanted a gen. 3. Now, before I jump in again, I just want to check out some options. Seems weightwise they are fairly close; Glock at 24 ozs., HK at 29... and the Lightweight Commander I have on layaway comes in at 26.. I know I could carry that Glock 17 all day long and not even notice it. The ol' back didn't care for the full size 1911 anymore.

The H&K USP is what came to mind when I read your description. I prefer the full-size in .45, but the compact is a fine gun. I know they're plastic, but they sound and feel like an all-steel gun.

I'm not a Glock person, but it's hard to ignore the appeal of a Glock 30.

I was all set to get a Glock not too long ago. Then I shot an HK and that was it....and I mean IT. I like the Glocks, but there's no comparison between them and my HK. Please don't take that as knocking the Glocks. Its really down to personal preference which is why I say at least try one. If you can't shoot it, at least fondle it.

Good luck. Its always fun buying new guns.

Yet another 9mm advice thread

To each his own, but my 9mm CCW is a CZ 75 Compact converted to single action, bought it here on The High Road.

I had a CZ P-01 but didn't like the lighter weight frame and more pronounced curve of the trigger. While the 9mm dosn't have a lot of recoil, I got back on target faster with the all steel compact.

After a couple of days the added weight was not noticed at all.

My mail CCW is one of 2 Kimber Compacts, series I. I know you said you don't like officer sized grips but to me the recoil of my Kimbers is less than the Combat Commander sized guns.

I also have a full sized CZ 75 that I am very fond of.

Just my 2 cents worth.

At SHOT Show, CZ was showing a polymer-framed RAMI. Nice gun. Not sure when it's going to be on the US market.

Well, I stopped in at the local pawn shop up the road from me today, just to have a look... and there laid one. USP 9mm. Got my chance to look one over. I thought it felt good; the grip sure didn't feel like it was going to move in my hand at all. Good texture. It felt a bit more top heavy than I expected; it felt bigger overall than my Glock did, but the grip did not feel clubby. Slide looks longer, and the total height looks shorter. Didn't feel bad at all.

Now, the trigger... that DA pull was stout, but what else should I have expected? DA is supposed to be. Now, the SA was surprising; I really kinda liked it. Take up was easy, tripped with a nice break... I was pleasantly surprised. I just might have to consider one of these babies...

I had a USP Compact in 40. I traded off because I felt it was thick and large for CCW and for a range gun why not have a full size? It was an excellent gun however and I'm still tempted to get a full size 45 but since I've picked up my CZ 97B that desire has pretty much vanished. :)

Consider a Steyr. Very nice grip angle, plastic, same trigger system as Glock with addition of a manual safety. Inexpensive from CDNN.

It's (the HK) top heavy when unloaded. When you have it fully loaded, it balances out very nicely. Did you try the Walther P99 QA?

Mikey the Glock 17 is tough to beat. I admit I am partial to Glocks. It is the gun I bet my life on. My wife and I both carry a G23 everyday. I don't care for the "shootability" of the Sigs and HKs. They both have a very high bore axis. This causes these guns to have much more muzzle flip than a Glock.
I am a believer in bigger is better when it comes to handguns. My next Glock will most likely be the G38. Glock 19/23 size in .45GAP.
I think a really neat gun would be a scaled down 1911 in this caliber. I listen to all of the 45ACP diehards put down this cartridge and just shake my head.

In my opinion...and I have owned Berettas, Glocks, S&Ws and Taurus 9mms, the Browning Hi-Power is the best affordable 9mm out there.

Best feeling grip, slim package, reliable, well made, accurate, all steel and the best trigger. I dont regret trading my 92F for the Belgian Beauty...not one second! I will be a Hi-Power shooter for life!

BHP's are my favorite; just too heavy on my hip these days. I'm not talking range, I'm talking daily carry. Nothing's too heavy at the range...

Have you looked at the Springfield XD-9? I have an XD in 40SW and love it.

Utterly reliable, accurate, better grip than a Glock and a better trigger. These have 15rd mags and carry a lifetime warranty and sell for around 375-400 bucks. They make a subsompact, a 4 incher and a 5 inch tactical model in htis line-up.

I have never had a problem with my XD-40 and am actually surprised at how well I like this thing and how well it shoots.

...worth a look.
