Yep, I'm not breaking any new ground but I do so love these threads with such a meeting of the minds as only THR can produce.

I'm looking for a pocket carry BUG/Deep concealment. When the notion first hit me my initial thought was a 3 inch 1911 for magazine and ammo compatibility with my primary carry (full size government) and I did pocket one of para ordinance's double action jobs. It fit and concealed well but I would probably need to modify my jeans pockets. Then my thoughts roamed to the inherent nastiness of pocket carry with lint and all. My sureness of the small 1911 waned and I started considering a snubbie but I may go back to autos and even the officers frame. Expense is a relatively large factor. I'd like to stay sub $500 but I could bare to save another 2 or 3 Benjamin's if that's my only option.

What say you all? I'm not too keen on going to a keltec or seacamp for the simple reason my hands will not hold one. My top three (in this order) are LCR (.357), S&W 642, or some kind of officer 1911.

I've heard that with single-stack magazines, you shouldn't go over the grip length with the magazine unless you have a grip extension, because the magazine can slide up and cause issues feeding. I only own one single-stack and I only own the magazines that came with it, so I can't verify if that's true, it's just what I've heard. So magazine compatibility might not be there.

If you like the .45, have you considered the XDs or the slimline Glock (don't remember which specific model it is). Those are probably going to be easier to hold than a .380, and they have the .45 compatibility you want.

I had not heard that. If that's true thank you very much for the information.

And yes I have considered the glock 36 and XDs but I had decided if I was going auto it would be officers model due to the magazine compatibility however given that I was wrong about that they are definitely back on the table.

I'll find the video where it was mentioned and link it, but I wont be able to until later tonight. Like I said, though, for me its second hand information. The guy who said it is very smart, so I'm not doubting him, I just haven't looked much at single stacks.

I don't think an officers 1911 or a glock 36 are pocket guns. The j frame or ruger lcr 38 are better for a backup in my opinion.

Since I didn't spell it out clearly enough, I have put an officers sized 1911 frame in my pocket so I'm not crazy. I know it fits I would only have to slightly modify my jeans to facilitate drawing.

a pocket carry BUG/Deep concealment.
I can't believe you said that and 3" 1911 in the same sentence!!

Deep cover means something small and flat.

Look at a S&W Bodyguard .380, or Ruger LCP, or something on that order that is flat & light.

Otherwise, your deep cover is going to be blown when you have adjust your Unit every few minutes.

Sometimes, even though you would love too, you just can't take a 155mm howitzer to a firefight in the jungle!

Sig 238 .380 built like a .45 maybe?

I personally prefer my NAA .22 WMR in a Dessanti (SP?) holster. I also often swap it out for an old S&W 651 Jframe.

I guess I would go with the 642, one of your choices. I can carry my 640 in my pocket, but 99% of the time it's in an IWB holster. Any 1911 frame, IMO, ain't much of a pocket pistol, no matter the make and model. But, the G36 is a pretty good compromise in that caliber, sizewise to me.

I would tend to stay away from something having an exposed hammer for pocket carry. Getting a BUG into a pocket isn't the issue. Getting it out in a hurry is. With an exposed hammer you may have a problem with snagging. As far as the lint problem goes, get a pocket holster.

I love my officers model, but I don't think I've ever though of pocket carry with one.

I'd look at the Kahrs, in the caliber of your choice. I know they get mixed reviews, but my PM9 has never given me any issues. I've noticed 1911 shooters generally seem to like it (grip angle?).

A holster of some sort is pretty key, IMO. I really don't want to draw and fire, only to discover a key I forgot in my pocket is jammed in the muzzle.

If you try to insert a fullsize 1911 mag in an Officers Model, it's easy to over insert it- when you drop the slide, it'll stop on the back of the magazine, which would be very disconcerting in the heat of the moment. On the range it really isn't an issue, as it doesn't seem to do any damage to the magazine.

I have tried them all.

The two that work for me for pocket carry are the Rohrbaugh, and a J frame S&W.

I sold or traded off every other one I tried.

My new pocket gun is the S&W Bodyguard .380. I think the initial bugs have been worked out and have been very impressed with the accuracy. EDC is a G30, comparatively, the weight difference alone will want to make you a believer in .380 adequacy.
