That's a tight budget.

A Remington 700 of some kind and whatever optic you can afford with what's left would be where I'd start looking, assuming your price includes a scope.

I saw a Remington Tactical VTR in .308 for $700 not long ago.

.308 maybe, simply due to cost. The short actions seem to be a little cheaper than long.

How accurate does it need to be, 1 MOA, 2 MOA, 1/2 MOA? If you can't get that extra $100 krochus mentioned, i would look for a used savage F T/R, then get a optic of some sort.

Savage 12 FTR if .308 is ok, otherwise any of the heavy barrelled 12's will do. Mine is a 12FV in.243 with a Sharpshooter supply LVT stock and Weaver Grand Slam 6.5-20, total cost for everything around $1,100. It holds 1/2 moa out to 600 yards wth no problem.

Savage 12 with upgraded stock. .308 due to price and availability of components. I got out for just over $1200 new with new Millet optics. Sub-moa @ 100 yards, one 5" group @ 600 yards, 200 rounds fired total. Sweetest out of the box shooter I've ever owned.

What I did -
Used Savage SA - $225
Shilen barrel - $300
B&C Medalist stock - $200
Farrell 10 MOA base - $60

Had money left over for a SSS trigger, but never bought it. Then I found a Sightron S3 with a FCH reticule for $400, and I was good to go. Could have found a Savage FTR or F-Class for the same money in the end, and had a 6mmBR.

I see comments like this all the time, and, to me, they seem to imply that there could be two rifles of shooting the same ammo that have thesame accuracy at one distance, say 1MOA @100 yards, but which have different accuracy at longer ranges.

If they are the same at 100 yds, they are going to be the same at 600 yds, or no?

eye5600,

I agree with your logic, and most loads/rifles that I've seen shot at 100 perform the same at 600-1000 yards (provided the load/bullet is capable of getting there). However, I have seen loads that would shoot great at 100 that "fell apart" (the groups opened up very disproportionately) at 1000 yards.

This assumes the standard deviation of muzzle velocity is very low (under 20). If it is large, you'll see vertical error due to MV change.

Well thanks for the recomendations I pick up my remington 700 sps tactical chambered in .308 tomorrow, when i get optics on it will post a range report
