I was wanting a Ruger SP101 3" stainless (may still get one if and when I stumble over a bag of money), but you guys have me looking at cap and ball revolvers again. I was over at Cabela's and thinking compact revolver which is also half way affordable. I'd really like a stainless Remmie, but they're kinda like three hundred bucks. So, I found a compact Remmie I like a lot, 5.5" barrel. Then there's this '62 Colt Police snub nose that intrigues me.

Whadda you guys think???? I don't know how to pick between the two other than price. I know the remmie is likely the better shooter and I'm probably going to go that direction. I don't have an open top anymore, though. Hmmm.

i just placed an order for this:

http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/t...&parentType=index&indexId=cat20817&hasJS=true

i just couldn't resist the $20 off coupon. the only thing is that it's on backorder. so i am patiently going to have to wait for 1 -2 weeks before i can start playing with it.

i was thinking of the 5.5" blued remmie, but i felt too weak for the stainless steel version. and i just had to get the target model.

for the woods and for the trails, my piece would still be my ruger old army. this 8" barreled remmie is just too large for my frame to carry around.

Wait for the Stainless says I!

In my HONEST opinion - and it is not going to make me any friends I suspect, I would wait and save up for a stainless 1858 which looks the Mutz Nuts. As for the 2 you are drooling over at the moment, the Police snubnose is, to say the least, hidious. :uhoh: :uhoh: :uhoh: :uhoh: The 5.5" - well I can take it or leave it
Now just tell us all WHY you have to go and spend all your money on one of these instead of saving up for the S/S Rem! That's the best choice for me:cuss:

Gotta LOVE tha stainless remmie, Pietta OR Uberti, i have both, gosh whatta lovely thing ta clean up, and nona this bake er in bacon grease like cast iron stuff ta contend with!

Manyirons needin coffe ta get outta hicktalk mode!

Yeah, I'm swinging Remington 'cause I like the look and I like .44 caliber. I wanted something a little handier than my Old Army, like the 5.5" barrel. It would split the size difference between my Remington .31 and my Old Army and a Remington would have the same closed top frame style. I see a collection trend here.:D

I had a stainless Old Army that got stolen in a home break in. Boy, I loved that thing. Just come home from the range, pull the cylinder, and put it in the dish washer. :D Yeah, you're right, I need to save for stainless. This one looks nice, though and I like the short barrel. I COULD get the stainless later, hmmm. LOL Now I friggin' want both.

But, now here's another option in short barrel .44 revolvers and the Navy is my favorite Colt. This one's stainless, engraved, and fluted! I LIKE the look! Maybe I could fit some pearlite grips on this thing. Wow, that'd look sharp!

That's a very nice lookin' handgun! I like it, but it's a little too close to my Old Army. I'm lookin' for something more compact in between my .31 pocket and my Old Army for this one. But, that gun would be a GREAT shooter! Enjoy and give us a range report when you get it!

$20 coupon. yes, cabelas gave me a $20 coupon for being a "loyal customer":D it expired today, so i decided to get the stainless steel target model for $299 yesterday. oh, boy, can't wait to get my hands on it. this is going to be my third c&b since christmas. :)

Wish i could say that! For me its more like third gun THIS week! Addiction is SO ugly!

Dang, I didn't get a $20 coupon... I've spent over a thousand dollars there over a couple years, too! :banghead:

Ah well, next time.

MCGunner,
I saw that stainless model from dixie a month back and shared it among us boys. But many felt that it ws too "cheap" for such a beautiful model. A Uberti, stainless steel, and a target model, for $250? it looked a little inviting but too fishy for me.

I have to put my vote in for the 5.5 Remington. I've got one and I love it, I'll bet you will too. Of course, you'll be saving money for another BP gun anyway  so get the 5.5 first and the stainless next! :D

Low Key, how well are the sights regulated on it? I mean, does it shoot pretty close to POA out of the box? Colts have a rep, and the one Navy I had did, of shooting really high. I can pull the bead out of that Navy and put a brazing rod in it, same thing I did to my Remmie .31 to regulate it. But, it'd be nice if I didn't have to do that.

Nah, no one is doing anything to you. But you might want to check out this report at thefiringline.com I wish gunrags were as good in their comparison.

Nah man, tha comic books gots ADVERTIZERS and things! Ya can't say NOTHIN bad about anythin!

Update on that navy .44 short barreled revolver. I have determined it must be polished CARBON steel, not blued, just in the white. Never a mention of stainless in the description of this gun on several sites I've found it despite its price. Hmm, back to the Remington.

Hello all,

I'm new to the forum. I've been lurking and reading all of your post for about a week now and you guys seem really cool. I went to Bass Pro a few days ago and bought a Pietta Navy 51' and the quality was alright. The kid that sold it to me gave me some questionable advice and left out quite a lot of information that I would have like to have known.

I took the gun back two days later when I learned that you can't convert a .44cal 51' to cowboy loads and I'm glad I did. I wound up buying a 58' Remmy made by Umberti and I was surprised by the superior quality. It did cost me a little more money but it was worth it. The 1858 I bought was used but in very good condition.

I'm curious as to how old the gun I bought is, it seems like it is around thirty or so years old. At least that it what I think by looking at the box and the manual that it came with. It was imported by Cabela's and I bought it at Valley Gun in Baltimore Co. Maryland. Would anyone know how I can go about finding out what year this gun was made in?

I'll be shooting it as soon as I possibly can. It seems like there aren't many places in Baltimore where I can shoot my gun. If anyone has any information on where I can go it would be much appreciated. I've learned that Elk Neck State Park has a good shooting range but it's around an hour from where I live. It only costs ten bucks to shoot all day so the price isn't bad, just the semi-long drive. I live in Baltimore county, east side.

The kid sold me .451 round balls with the 1851 Navy. I didn't take the balls back when I returned the gun, from what I've read on the forum so far it would have been better if I would have gotten .454 or .457, is this true? Do you think it would be worth my time to take the .451 balls back to bass pro and get the larger .454's or .457 balls? thanks for all of the great information everyone.

Thanks,

The Sicilian.

Only question I can answer is I think you should be fine with the .451 balls. When you load 'em, they should fit tight and shave a little lead from around where you press 'em in. Don't forget to patch under 'em or put crisco over 'em to keep flash from one cylinder causing a chain fire. If they don't shave a little lead on the way in, you should use a larger ball. Set one down on a chamber with the cylinder out. If it'll go in without pressing, for sure it's too small. If it looks like it will shave a little lead when pressed, keep 'em and use 'em.

I know that .457 balls will press into a Remington, I've shot 'em in a Navy Colt .44 which normally used .451 ball. They are what I use in my Ruger Old Army. But, I think the Remington has a slightly smaller bore/chamber than the Ruger.

Balls! - Sorry!!!

I use a .457 ball in my Pietta 1858 Remington and they are just right for a tight fit. I do not use lube on top of the ball but I did use a lube pill between the ball and the powder which is in a paper cartridge form ( as you know ) with a card wad on top of it. I am going to replace the lube pill with a lube wad which should reduce the mess after shooting.

Mine's a Pietta and they put a tall front sight on their stuff. My pistol shoots just a tad bit low (couple of inches at 20yrds) and I've been filing the front sight one stroke at a time to bring it closer to POA.
