WARNING: Anyone who sells black powder guns over the internet and says they are not returnable is to be avoided at all costs. That's totally unacceptable. Any good, reputable internet retailer of black powder equipment will allow returns for repair, replacement or refund.

Never, ever, under any circumstances, buy a black powder gun sight unseen without the expressed and agreed right to return it for a full refund after a sufficient inspection period.

Note the 'unreturnable' statement at the bottom of the ad.

And yes, Cabela's has a very good reputation for customer service. Cheaperthandirt.com not only has a bad reputation, their prices are higher. Run, don't walk away.

I agree that a non-returnable policy is a no-no. But, there is an option is you still buy from them and it has to be returned - deal directly with Traditions. I bought two new guns that needed parts - A Pietta from Traditions and an Uberti from Taylors. They both keep track of their serial numbers and warranty their guns for (I think) a year. Both Traditions and Taylors offered to take the gun back and fix or repair as needed. Both times I decided to keep the gun and both companies sent me new parts, no charge - stuff like hands, bolts, even a complete trigger/hand combo.
But the non-returnable policy still bothers me.

For 225 you can get the same gun with a steel frame. These guys give excellent service and will talk to you on the phone and answer any questions. I am sure there are other small companies that are just as good.

I bought a 1851 brass from Colt from Cabela's mine uses #10 caps. If you want to save some money don't buy the starter kit. Here is a shopping list to make your own starter kit.

Dish soap
gun oil
WD-40
Windex
tin of #10 caps
pound of fff Goex or P Pyrodex
powder can lid with pour spout
one empty 38 special case for power measure = 23gr BP
451 or .454 balls my 51 likes .454 balls
one can of Crisco
nipple wrench

the one from cheaper than dirt is way tooo much money i bought mine from cabelas. i think 139.99. Cabelas customer service is awesome too. If anything is wrong with the gun upon inspection just return it they will send you another one. They get some good guns from Pietta.

Excellent choice. It's a superb gun. Call Cabela's customer service phone number for advice about ball and cap sizes. They're very helpful people.

I bought that same 58 Remington last year from Cabela's. I like mine it shoots well. Mine uses #10 caps and shoots .451 balls but is a lot more accurate with .454 balls.
