Or more like... "You have $400.00 to $700.00"...

After reading some of the replies on My earlier thread about the purchase of a M1911-A1 type, I've done some thinking.
I'd like to know what You would get if You had $400-$700(maybe $800.00) dollars to spend on a new semi-auto pistol.
Again, it would have to be reliable straight out of the box. It would have to be Your "go to" gun. This pistol would have to go bang when You need it most. In addition, The pistol would be used for range work, etc. .
I'm looking at full size mostly, but am open to compacts and the like. I have no real preferences to a certain type of manual of arms. I'm pretty flexible.

It would probably be left box stock. I'm primarily thinking about 9MM and .45 ACP. Maybe... just maybe... a .40 Auto.
I am still looking at the CZ's and the Rugers, but I'm also looking at some others out there. For example:

Sig 226, 229, 220
Sig Pro
S.A. XD series
Glock 17, 19, 34

I like the Beretta 92's, but have heard that they are using a lot of plastic parts these days. I don't know much about the subject though, is it true? Are these critical parts we're talking about here?
By the way, all of these pistols feel fine in My hands.
Once again, I really apprecieate all the help on this. Thanks everyone!

:D

I don't own one but have a few friends who swear by the CZ clone of the Beretta 92, saying it is every bit as good as the Beretta, only cheaper.

The Kimber Classic falls within your parameters. My new one is extremely accurate, however, I still have the random malfuction due to the gun being SO TIGHT. It gets better every time I shoot it.

Kimber tells you in the owners manual that the gun needs minimum of 250 rds put thru it before you take the pistol very seriously. One of their smiths at the custom shop said the number should be 3 or 4 times that high. They build them bank-vault tight.

Not a big deal to me as I load all my ammo anyway. So far I've run about 400 rds thru the gun and it's coming along very well. Pistol doesn't seem to care which bullet I feed it either and this is good. Most automatics are a bit tempermental but I'd say the Kimber guns are better than average about what they like and don't like.

I think you mean the Taurus clone of the Beretta 92. Not really a clone, more of an improved version of the older model Beretta. Mine's been great, I shoot it tons more than my Beretta because it'll do Cocked'n'Locked and I hate DA/SA.

But for under $400, no contest, IMHO CZ 75B is the only game in town. Out of the box good, rugged and accurate, better than decent trigger and C'n'L or DA/SA carry options. 9mm for cheap shooting or .40 S&W for defense.

$400-$800 covers just about every mainstream handgun brand if you leave off the bells and wistles. If I could have only one handgun it'd be a 1911. YMMV.
1911 was not my first handgun, took me a while to see the light.

Any of the following...

SA XD-9 Service
Beretta 92FS Brigadier
FN Forty-Nine
Hi-Power Mk.III
SA Mil-Spec 1911
SA GI M1911A1

Plus several others I'm forgetting... but those specific ones are on my "List to buy someday, 7-25-2004 Edition."

S&W 3913............probably a Ladysmith model as I don't need an accessory rail............flat, accurate, utterly reliable out of the box....feels great in the hand especially with a pair of Hogue's. Both carries well concealed and will hold up at the range. Superior customer service from S&W......and there would be money left over for range and carry ammo and to go out for a nice meal with friends or family.

That's just me though !
-Regards

I still hear too many good things about the CZ P-01. It's at the top of my next-to-buy list.

I have a Beretta 92 FS that shoots great. The only plastic part that concerns me is the guide rod, but there are a ton of metal replacements in the $20-$30 range.

Well, I just bought a CZ 85 Compact, the new CZ .40 S&W with a rail, and I can't recommend it enough. I LOVE this gun. It's as accurate as my Glock 24P and as controllable as my full size CZ 75B 9mm. What more could you possibly ask for?

I got it for $469, MSRP is $609. Doubt you can find a lower price than $469, they were really pulling out the stops to get my sale :D

Check out my range report in this thread.

For a full-size gun: CZ 75 B SA or Glock 34

The CZ is a nice steel gun, has a more natural grip angle for most people, and has a manual safety. The Glock is... well a Glock; legendary for reliability and durability under awful conditions.

For an all-purpose & CCW gun: Glock 19

There's no getting around it... the Glock 19 is probably a near perfect compromise gun. Simple (sort of), lightweight, compact, rugged... it has some flaws in my opinion, but it still remains at the top of my list for a gun that'll do it all with relative ease.

Springfield Armory XDs and/or Browning Hi-Powers would also be right up there with the CZs and Glocks on my list for full-size guns.

Sigs, HKs, Berettas, S&Ws, are all fine weapons, but the faults I attribute to them don't make them better choices for me than CZs or Glocks.

As much as I love 1911's (I have one as my principle home defense gun & another for CCW), they always seem to need "something" to make them work properly, and I often find it hard to fully trust them.

I'm going to have to go with the listed Sigs, and I prefer the classic P-series over the Pro series for a variety or reasons. With regards to which Sig, it would all depend on your final caliber choice. If you decide on .45, then go with that P220; there's not a finer DA combat .45 on the market. If 9mm is the way you want to go, same with the P226 -- hard to find a better DA 9mm. If .40, then P229 (which can be converted to a .357Sig and 9mm with factory (.357Sig) and conversion (9mm) barrels...three guns in one!). I have all three, and find the P229 fits my hand the best, but I enjoy all three...and have never had a single FTE or FTF in any of them, ever. And SigArms service is tough be beat (from what I've heard...I've never had to send any of mine back:)).

They should all be available at or under your $700 budget.

I shoot a lot of rounds through my Sig P228 9mm and my CZ 75B dualtone in .40 S&W, so I can recommend either or both of these guns.

Browning Hi Power in 9m or 40, for that price you can have just about any finsh you want and fixed or adjustable sights. The only pistol I'd be absolutely sure you could take out of the box and put it in a holster ready to go.

Carry or not to Kerry

My choice would either be a Sig 220, H&K USP (Full Size or Compact- both work flawlessly), any Glock (you gotta love that short trigger reset), or a S&W CS-9 (an older one- I hear new ones aint hitting on much).

Now for my reasoning:

Sig 220 - ANy weapon that the Seals use is OK by me.

H&K - Have you ever shot one

Glock - The consumate reliable gun and that reset

S&W CS-9 - Utter flawless operation meets carry it anywhere size
