Local TV news ran this story tonight, I am not making this up:

Some Spring Lake Residents Upset Over Stray Cat Incident
Residents Claim Police Officer Shot Cat Without Cause

SPRING LAKE, N.C. -- Some people who cared for a blind stray cat are upset over a Spring Lake police officer's actions.

Over the last eight years, Terry Burby became especially fond of a blind cat named Freddie. She said the 14-pound stray adopted her and everyone else at a Spring Lake shopping center.

"I still look for him under the car just about every day," she said.

Weeks ago, Burby came to work and Freddie was not waiting at the door. People who work closeby said over the weekend, they heard a shot and came running.

Authorities say a Spring Lake police officer shot the cat. The officer was not available to talk with WRAL about why he shot the cat, but workers said he told them it was acting strangely so he thought it had rabies.

"It really made me angry because Freddie was shot. I saw no need for it," business owner Calvin Brown said.

Spring Lake Police Chief Jeff Insley said some shootings of animals are justified. He is now trying to find out if the rookie officer did the right thing in this case.

Some of the workers asked police for the cat's remains so they could bury him, but Insley said he does not know what happened to the cat. Cumberland County Animal Control workers said the animal was never turned over to them for rabies testing or proper disposal.

People, don't jump to emotional conclusions on this incident, one way or another. Results of the "investigation" will be posted as soon as corpus delicti has been established.

:D

What an utter abomination! Couldn't he see the cat's little sunglasses and white cane?!?:D

[Yosemite Sam Voice]Aaaaaaahhhhh hates cats.[Yosemite Sam Voice off]

Here's how it went down:

The cat weight 14lbs was obviously a high capacity Kop killin assault cat.

He approached the officer with his back arched, meowing in a belligerent manner. The officer ordered the cat to stop, before it got fur on his uniform trousers. The cat continued to advance, and quickened his pace. The officer saw an empty colt45 bottle near the dumpster where the cat was hangin out. Obviously the Cat was drunk, aggressive and spoilin for a fight.
Officer drew his gun, the cat seeing the shiney object thought it was a can of his favorite tuna, and quickened his pace as well as his meowing.

Officer drew a bead and pow one less dealy assault cat loose on the street, lookin for a trouser leg to rub against.
:barf:

Well at least he wasn't attacking a police dog anyway!:scrutiny:

Real tuff guy too. Takes skill to hit a blind 14 lb Cat. Wonder how close he was able to sneak up on it before he shot? Or did he wait until the Cat rubbed up against his legs. Nothing personal to any LEO, but it sounds like another trigger happy Law man is out there!
:(

Most departments permit the shooting of animals where said animal is injured, suffering and cannot be saved. A deer or dog struck by a car is a good example. The other time when an animal may be shot is if it is a public safety hazard (dog foaming at mouth, bit someone, attacking someone).

As for Freddie, dunno and let's wait for a follow-up report. If it is substantiated that the officer's shooting was unjustified, I'm sure the Chief will respond appropriately.

You know, you folks get all blubbery about a cop shooting a dog. I see no difference here.

stray cat you say? sooo....no one owned it? it was no ones pet? just some cat that eats out of garbage and probably had fleas, ticks, crabs, and some other diseases?
