(I'll start with only abbreviations)

you think MOA is an extinct prehistoric bird

you think a BUG is an insect

you think BP is a company that sells gasoline

you think CHP is the California Highway Patrol

you think DA is a prosecutor

you think SA is South America

you think FFL is Finer Foods of Louisiana

you think BG means Brothers Gibb

you think ATF is something your car needs

you think POI is something you ate vacationing in Hawaii

LOL Cannonball,

BUT. I would strongly advise that we treat our new members in an encouraging and non-sarcastic manner. After all, are we trying to unify our community and introduce more people to our cause, or are we trying to discourage people and make them go away, thinking: "why are they so rude?"

Just some points of advice.

BTW. Welcome to THR Orienteeer.

No harm meant. We were all newbies once.

That is true:)

I appreciate the humor of the above abbreviations. Just like the 201? things that -------- is not supposed to do when he joined the army? thread that was posted here some time ago? That was probably the funniest stuff I read besides the Mall Ninja threads.

i dont know why but whenever i see "ATF" i just instantly think of "Jack-booted-thugs"....

You have ruined me THR...

hehe... Lighten up. I don't see any insult here.

I'm hardly a gun newbie-- 28 years of guns and shooting and several years of perusing/posting gun forums. And I've had to take a few minutes to figure some of those out.

:)

I got all but BG. I'm guessing Bad Guy. Some of these are more common to Internet forums than "the real world." Many of us hunted/shot for years and never usee Internet shorthand.

While I'm FAR from being a newbie to guns,I still have to scratch my head over some of these abbreviations. FTR (for the record) I grew up reading Jack O'Connor, Elmer Keith,Skeeter Skelton and Grits Gresham. Wooops. almost forgot my favorite..Warren Page!

Ok, grade me:

MOA: Minute of Angle

BUG: Back Up Gun

BP: Black Powder

CHP: Concealed Handgun Permit

DA: Double Action

SA: Single Action

FFL: Federal Firearms License

BG: Bad Guy

ATF: Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms

POI: Point of Impact

(My additions)

CCW: Carry Concealed Weapon

SHTF: Stuff Hits The Fan

SOB: Small of Back

IWB: In the Waist Band

For some reason, my brain still goes to BUG = Big Ugly Gun. The first time I saw it I thought it was a strange one for a gun site(Ugly Gun???), but figured everyone was talking about a Glock...after thinking about that(a Glock is small), I figured it was a reference to an AK47. :D

Hmmm...
The fact that I DO know the meanings of every one of those abbreviations gave me the uneasy feeling that I spend too much time reading about guns when I oughtta be out SHOOTIN' 'em. :)

You're a newby if you think .38 means .38.

A simple question on one of these forums "how come a .357 and a .38 used the same barrel and how could anybody get numbers that far wrong" was met with pained sighs and hoots of derision.

Thanks to the one responder who explained the issues and decisions of the 1860's to me.

As a newbie, I thought this was funny and informative. I've been reading long enough to get most of them but BP got me.

I couldn't remember CHP. I remember many years ago when I was trying to learn about guns, pre internet. I thought Luger and Ruger were somehow interrelated! I really didn't understand the need for guns like a service sized revolver, I'd stare at S&W model posters and gunshop counters and figure a S&W mod 29 with a 8 3/8" barrel and a NAA mini revolver would cover all my needs!

Keep in mind I was 12 years old maybe. I rember being punished by my dad for something and told I couldn't read gun mags/books for a time! I hid a book and still read it! Don't normal kids hide a porn mag or comics or something?

I thought when I was starting getting in to guns pistol and rifle mags were like disposable or included with the ammo as I assumed from movies and such that they should be just tossed away casually.
