I posted in reloading last week about some loads that just did not seem right, even after check after check after check. Well, guess what, there was clearly a problem. More details on reloading, if interested.

But, the good news is that I have one keyhole shooting mutha, the bad news..I got one keyhole shooting mutha.

100yds. The round hole, 8'oclock was first of 100gn BT's I fired, POI way right of target that was beside to the left of this one. The two keyholes are the 9th and 10th fired with suspect rounds. From 100 yds, and hot, stingy eyes, I just thought the reactive targets were having a good day, really flaking! Till I walked down range. Doh!

Oh, forgot, here is the primary target, just for full disclosure:

How the? There's really only 3 ways that could happen. One, you're shooting a bullet too heavy for your barrel's twist rate. Two, you're shooting undersized bullets that aren't gripping the rifling properly. Three, you're shooting a severely underpowered load that doesn't give sufficient velocity and rotation speed.

Usually the problem is caused by #1.

I think it was number 2, these were 87gn sierras that just could not get near the lands. I was worried and talked about this on the reloading thread, when I loaded them, but numerous checks and rechecks could not find a flaw, so I tried them out. pretty wild

I actually did laugh out loud! I've never seen anything keyhole that bad. You truly have something special going on. I bet that would keel a deer right on over. Wouldn't penetrate worth a dang, but it would surely have almost 100% energy dump! I do hope that you get it figured out, though. That has to be somewhat aggrevating.

What the hell???

Is there a big chunk missing from your crown? Missallgned muzzle accessory? Barrel completely eroded and shot to hell? You can normally get away with even a slow 1:12 twist on the 87 at .25-06 velocities.

Until post #5 i was sure you were shooting a 2-groove No.4 Enfield.... they don't do BT bullets...

Fella's;

Just looking at the targets, before getting into the details of the post, I too thought it was an Enfield. A friend of my son had one that'd match those targets at a hundred yards.

As a side note, I told Matt, my son's friend, that he should never fire the gun at longer ranges, because it was obvious that the bullets were tryin' to U-turn & come back at him. For about two seconds :what: :eek:

:evil: 900F

I just don't know. I have shot very good groups with 90,100,110, and115 gr bullets. Even shot a couple dozen after this, 100 and 110. They shot and grouped fine.

I spent hours today doing a bunch of techniques and think I now have the right bullet length.... Almost 1/2 inch longer than these keyhole specials!
