OR, Why can stuff like this happen to me :(

OR, Fence sitter converted by a crazy stroke of good luck :D

I was in the local gun shop yesterday morning picking up and mounting a new set of rings and bases on my Super 14 44 mag barrel for my T/C when this plain looking suburbanite yuppy come walking in with a cosmoline soaked box.

Because I was behind the counter and the two counter guys were busy with other customers he came up to me. I wiped off my hands and asked him how his morning was going. He replied with a "Good, just enjoying the cool morning air."

He went on to say that he had been out garage saling and bought what he thought was an air rifle but turned out to be a real gun and he was currious about what it was. He said he did not really know anything about guns but had always thought of buying one.

Well, I told him to open the box and lets have a look see. He opens this box and there sits a NEW in the cosmoline, un fired, with all the accesories, Norinco 84s .223 :what:

He sees the look on my face and asks whats wrong, I tell him that he has a highly sought after, rather expensive, pre-ban, hated by DI-FI, battle rifle.

He steps back for a moment while I get the blue book out and show him the page that says he has a > $1000.00 rifle sitting there. I was floored, I asked him what he paid for it thinking like maybe $500.00 at the lowest, considering it was a garage sale.

Are you ready for this, you have to be sitting down, or at least swollow your coffee before continuing, OK you have been warned.

SEVEN DOLLARS! YUP, that is correct, you are not seeing things $7.00 smackers, between 6 and 8, that is it, seven whole clams. He even showed me the reciept.

After I pick my self up off the floor and the other two guys come over to see what the comotion is about, I shake his hand and told him if doesn't buy a lottery ticket today he is nuts.

We sat there and talked guns and AKs for a while, We show him all the basics, give him a safety talk, and he buys a few boxes of 223 and leaves.

Chances are we will be talking about this for a while at the shop, man, some people have all the good mojo.

Edited to fix the mumbers ;)

I really need to hit the garage sale circuit I think. On Glocktalk someone made out with a Colt Officer's Model for $50 from a yard sale. Now this!

Hehe, 7 is between 6 and 8 btw. :neener:

I wouldn't want to be around that guy in a thunder storm!:D

what a deal! I'll bet if the seller knew what he/she had they'd be kicking themselves right about now.

He went on to say that he had been out garage saling
I've never been to a garage sale before, but I have a sudden urge to start! :what:

7 dollars... amazing.

Fella's;

And I thought I done good stopping into Glenrock Components in Glenrock Wyoming & finding a Pachmayr Presentation recoil pad for my Tikka .338 for $13.00! I'm just a third-rate piker compared to that deal!!

'Scuse me while I go chew the rug for a moment or two.

Eep. Eeep. EEEEEPP!

I have this sudden urge to hit the garage sales around here. But nah, it'll never happen. *sigh*

$7? Mother of all bargains and this is the stuph that the Antique Road Show is made of - OK, AKs don't qualify.

Florida has some pretty interesting garage sales...............oh my is that a dirty ole hand gun sitting next to those pipe wrenches.........yup, it sure is.

My luck has me seeing air rifles, like that lucky man thought he bought.

Ya gotta get up pretty early to beat those garage sale hunters though..............sheeesh, they are like those bible thumping door knockers that hit your buzzer at 7:30 am.........:what: :fire:

Does the buyer have a moral obligation....

I have a question for you guys:

Does the buyer have a moral (not legal) obligation to make the deal fairer to the uninformed seller, and why or why not?

The assumption for the question will be that the buyer didn't suspect that the "air gun" was real and that he expected the value of his purchase was was inline with what he paid.

This is just a question and not a suggestion nor am I passing judgement, I just want to know what you think.

Respectfully,

jdkelly

Absolutely not. The seller couldn't care less about keeping the firearm or getting a good price otherwise they would bring it to a gun show or a dealer to sell it, or at the very least look it up in a blue book.

Do your part to keep guns out of the hands of gangbangers and crackheads... buy em yourself.

Kind of like how I know someone who found a 95%+ condition Winchester M1Garand, all matching, at a garage sale for $50?

Yeah, he was happy.

I really think I'll be able to find bargains in other states.

In MA it's illegal for one person to sell to another person, whether it be ammo or guns. Good thing that stops so much crime, huh?

Perhaps a bit OT, but a buddy of mine had a garage sale. He was selling an old air conditioner. He wanted $15. A guy comes up who apparently didn't speak/understand english too well and asks how much. Buddy says "$15". Guy asks "will you take $40 for it?". Buddy "Yeah, yeah, I'd take $40."
:D

You never know if he was barganing and thought your friend said fifty, or if he was being nice. I usually offer a bit more if what the asking price is is much too little, but then again I'm usually only going to church/women's shelter sales.

This is the second one of these posts today!! I am definetly going to start going to more garage sales!!

Just hope the guy decides to keep it and take up the hobby. He's probably considering selling it (and I'll bet his wife is, too!).

We need garage sales like that here in Oklahoma.

Is that really true??? What do you do, give it away or buy stuff only from dealers??

I've been supervising a roofing project in an apartment complex for the last month. Every Friday the whole neighborhood has a garage sale which I've been ignoring. Guess what I'll be doing next Friday?

We can only buy from dealers. Hell, even giving GIFTS of ammo or guns is a big no no here.

Even magazines are like that now.
