The brass plate works.

I would have used plugs, thread lock and filed off.

Great $12 fix.

The brass is a lot nicer than I would have thought. Almost makes me wonder what an engraved brass plate to cover the side of the receiver would be like.

I wonder how much of a pain it would be to have some of the top steel milled away and then have a thin brass plate be inlaid into the steel so that the brass sits flush. I'd be a little concerned about it affecting the strength of the receiver, though.
