HELP!!!!!!

I am being tempted to buy a high capacity semi-auto.

Please talk me out of this right now!

Someone resurect the "Why a Revolver" Thread.....quick.

I am reaching for the check book.
Stop me!

nothing wrong with a semi auto as long as you have more then one weapon. a good med. frame revolver is all the weapon you really need if you just have one. My ruger security six is my field gun, the 642 is the always weapon but my beretta 92 is the one that rest on my night stand just in case. each have a little diffence mission but if I could only have one it would have to be the ruger as it can fill more of the roles.

be safe

Go ahead, it's ok to also have a semi-auto, as long as you have at least one revolver :) I got tired of the revolver vs. semi debate, so got one of each - Sp101 .357 and XD .45 compact - twice the fun at the range...(also recently picked up a .22 rifle since ammo getting too $$$ (even with reloading) - can now get more shootin' on without breaking the bank :) :)

Nothing wrong with crissing over now and then. I'm a tried and true fan and purcher of Ruger S/A's, Bisleys especially yet the shelf below many of these is 1/2 filled with Hk pistols. Each has it's place and purpose. Spring to the other side, just make sure you come back.

Revolvers?

I know how you feel. i just started shooting 2700 bulleye. I've got 2 Colts, Officers pistol Match Revolvers 6 " barrels, one in .22 and one in .38 special. well i had to decide (like you) for a .45, So, I purchased my first. Springfield .45 Auto National Match. It's different, but it is FUN!. Go for it, you wont be dissapointed. just be safe.

Hello, I too jumped off the revolver only club. Now I own 7 semi-autos, and all are of a different caliber, except I have two 9mm's, a compact & a full size one. A word of warning; Like a famous TV ad "You can't have just one" or something like that.:D LM.

It's okay to diversify as long as you remember your roots. :)

My EDC's are mostly revolvers, but my nightstand guns are Semi-autos. That is not to say that a medium frame revolver won't do the trick, just that in my case being woke up in the middle of the night to a fight for my life would mean that I would be in a bad, bad position to defend myself with a heavy steel revolver.

I have tons of trouble with my hands at night from both arthritis and carpal tunnel syndrome so a light gun with a short trigger pull and lots of ammo is what I am the most comfortable with at my bedside.

I know, I know. There are plenty of good revolvers that would do too, but I gotta have some justification for keeping the autos around, don't I? :D

Get the semi-auto!! Keep your revolvers though. Take your semi-auto to a defensive pistol class to get used to it.

I certainly understand (finally) why people like revolvers. The "30 day revolver carry experiment" that I'm doing has shown me the way.

What gun are you thinking of getting?

I am far, far from an expert but there are far fewer "misfires" and no failures to feed with a revolver.

If you have an auto you must make sure that it feeds and fires properly with the ammo you intend to use for SD. It's less critical at the range, but I want something totally reliable to carry.

That said, I have 1 carry revolver, a 638, and 3 autos. I have 3 other revolvers that are too large to carry.

I have a dozen or so bottom feeders, of course all but one of them have dancing ponies on them and the one that doesn't was a WWII issue 1911 so that doesn't count since it never comes out of the safe. While I am a revolver nut I still appreciate a good 1911, in fact I carry a 1911 about half the time. Which one to carry is dependant on what clothes your wearing, I really like a full size 80 in stainless but the new agent and defender are easier to conceal and much lighter. So in short there is nothing wrong with bottom feeders IMHO. It's good to have some from each world.

Moon Clips

Hey, here ya go.....

I have a couple of 45 autos.... and bought a S&W M625. I experiment with handloads from time to time, and now and then I load a batch of something that the autos won't reliable feed with (like 185 grain wadcutters). So I'd have this pile of 45 ACP that was just a little problematic.

Problem solved: 625 using moon clips. Cool! And in the winter time, shooting with snow on the range, I don't have to dig for my ejected brass. I just keep shooting 45 in my revolver. You can do the same with a Ruger Convertible in 45ACP/45 Colt, or 9mm/357. I have both of those, too, by the way. Same deal with the S&W 610, for .40 and 10mm (I think those are discontinued, but not exceedingly rare).

What more justification do you need? Works for me.... :D

You guys are NOT helping! :)

I started shooting with semi-autos. I have owned almoat everything under the sun at one point or another.

I have guns for self defense and switched to all revolvers about 9-10 years ago. I just love revolvers.

I am thinking of getting a 9mm (cheap ammo) to take to the range to shoot. No carry time for this auto. Just, shoot the heck out of it and it wont take me a long time to clean.
I have been considering the: Px4 Storm, XDm, Beretta 92, Ruger P93, and many others.
I had 2 bad experiences with Sigs.
HK USP mag release always hit me wrong.
Glocks just don't "do it" for me. Yet I respect their ease of maintenance.

Sigh

Now if I open this can of worms I will officially be a gun nut.....Wait! I have not started an addiction with black rifles yet.
Does this ever end?

Get Out of Denial.

Look, my friend, getting out of denial :scrutiny: is the first step. Most of us need at least one 12-step program at one time or another. Recognize it, learn to live with The Force. Look at the bright side - you have lots of company here that's only half a bubble off plumb.

Welcome.:D

Thanks for all the replys!

I went to a gun show today. Plastic this and that; every where! Then, I went to a local gun store and handled a Marlin 1894c.

Then, I came home and pulled out all the revolvers and just handled them (safely) for a while.

My thoughts of getting an auto have ceased.
Whew! Now, I am at home again.

I have more revolvers than autos, but don't mean I have to give up my wondernine because I like revolvers, now, does it? Hell, I even enjoy shooting it now and then. LOL Fortunately, brass is everywhere for it at the range. I always come home with more than I left with. NOBODY tosses .38, .357, .45 colt brass. WHAT'S UP WITH YOU REVOLVER PEOPLE, BUNCHA NEAT FREAKS OR SOMETHIN'?

As penance for this near fall from grace you must go forth on the morrow at the first of the new day's sun and purchase an SA revolver to add to the collection. Only thusly can your earthbound mortal soul be cleansed of the deamon that almost took you away to purgatory.... :D

I understand your dislike of plastic guns as I'm no fan, either. But, since you said that a 9MM would not be for carry, you don't have to worry about weight or size. That being the case, I suggest looking at a Star Mod 30. It's built like a '49 Chrysler. It's solid metal and weighs quite a bit. Because of the weight, the recoil is very little; it is a double tap monster. It holds 15+1 rounds, too. I see them unused in the box for $350 online. Mine I bought used and it cost $235, I think. And, S&W 5900 mags work just fine in it. I did have to remove the magazine safety lever on the gun but this was better than having only one magazine. It's a great range gun, very accurate. It does frequent next-to-the-bed duty at my place. Oh yeah, after thousands of rounds, all kinds of different makers and loads, my Mod 30MI has not jammed once.

Star mod 30. I will keep that in mind if the temptation ever arises again.

BCrider. the gun shop is closed on Sunday. But, I may just go there on the morrow. I do need a SA Blackhawk with a 4 5/8th inch brl.

A man can never have too many .357 magnums :)

ps I did perform a rosary today for penance. Hope that counts :)

I like 'em both, although, my tastes are drifting away from the combat tupperware. I like the feel of a steel gun. My XD9s are great but my tastes are more in the revolver/1911 area now.

Just to make sure you don't get tempted again go out and buy yourself a high-cap .357 Magnum revolver. Any one of the M327 or M627's will do fine. I would say 8 rounds of .357 Magnum will fix most problems. :)

Nothing wrong with bottom feeders. I carry one regularly. They have pros and cons. Pros- easier to change mags than reload a cylinder, generally higher capacity. Cons- jams, small pieces to lose when cleaning, clearing misfires...
Its all about what you're more comfortable with. I like a good auto, but I LOVE my wheel guns.
