She gets you an M14 for christmas!!!!
DAMN, she surpised me the other day on this one, had NO idea.
So I told her that I was going to buy an M14 this friday cause they had some in stock for about 500$. Told her that it would be a good hunting rifle, it has a powerfull cartridge and its one of the finest rifles ever built which is based off of the M1 garand.
It was a norinco M14S, the "s" is for 'sporter' which indicates that there is no bayonett lug, no select fire, and a permanently attached flash suppressor. It came with a 5 round magazine, buttstock cleaning kit and too much packing oil/grease for any gun.
So I picked it up and after I paid for it and we brought it to the car, she gave me an envelope with 900$ cash in it, saying that she just got paid from a big side job (she developes houses) and wanted to buy me this herself, but I was too impatient Said she had her eye on this for me for the past couple weeks and wanted one as well, so half of the money was for me to order hers through the mail which will cost 100$ less. I was pretty damned overwhelmed to say the least...
So here are some pictures of the norinco
Feels extremley sturdy, built fairly well, the finish isn't all that great at all but its a rifle for the sticks, who cares
This is the supposedly welded on flash hider, I cannot find any welds whatsoever on this, just a castle nut with a locking allen screw, thats it. Defenitly no bayonet lug however.
Made in china, it looks it.
Brand new production 2007
The stock looks like its 40 some years old, lots of dings, dents and scratches under the finish, wood feels kind of soft. Wouldn't mind replacing this with something nicer down the road.
Some first impressions:
Feels rugged and came packed with a real stinky oil that was just all over it, dripping out of it when I removed it from its packing baggy. The sights when turned felt real gritty like something was in there other than grease, so I began a full disassembly and cleaning procedure. Field stripped it, then went to the next stage, disassembled the trigger group completley whiped down all parts. Took off the heat shield, took out the bolt, op rod, recoil rod/spring and whiped them all down as well as the reciever and gas-tube piston. Took em all to get bathed in nice hot soapy water to remove all of the packing grease, threw them in the toaster oven to fully dry for about 6 minutes. Lubed all parts down with clp and re-assembled, used grease on the action parts and re-assembled. Had alot of fun doing it, took about 6 hours.
I order hers on monday morning as she's dying to get it as well, we'll do the same thing for her.
I haven't fired it, there's no .308 ammo at 3 of the main places I goto, but she wants me to wait until we have both of ours.
Hopefully it will perform flawlessly, we'll see in about 2 weeks.
