So as the title states I would like to get a black powder revolver. I have a few questions. I live in Illinois and other than a foid card are there any other restrictions? Such as a waiting period. Is it more economical to purchase supplies such as powder and caps on the web or locally?

Can't help you with Ill. law. I don't think you need anything more than what you have. There may be a limit on how much BP you can keep in your house, subdivision, county etc.

What are your interests? Cowboy Action, Civil War, Buckskinner, Rev. War, `1812??

Most economical is to look local for some things and others buy on line. Over all, if you are with a group of the same interest, good used gear and equipment can be reasonably had. Group buys can be arranged for powder and cap purchases on line for much less than you can usually buy local.

Where are you in Ill? If you are in the Springfield area, check with the 114th Ill. Vol. INF Regiment at Lincoln'sTomb. They are involved in many eras of the BP shooting back to Rev. War forward. Principally, they serve as an Honor Guard for the Tomb and I believe ?? a ceremonial roll for the Governor also. They have some that re-enact, competition shooting, and ceremonial duties as well. You can pick your favorite if you can get in to it.

Addition:

Where you are in Ill. matters also in getting your gear. North different places, South end Dixie Gunworks in Union City TN is worth a trip. At least get DG 's catalog as a good reference guide to BP.

Welcome!
With buying powder and caps, you'd have to be pretty remote for your gasoline cost to be greater than the HazMat shipping cost, I think.

Illinois?
Check your State regs first!
Buying powder and caps locally, if you can IS the way to go because of Hazmat regs.
Try to find a shooter in your neighborhood as a fellow shooter can be invaluable as far as info AND a place to shoot.

If there's a way for Illinois (and Chicago in particular) to make a firearm-related acquisition illegal, they will do it. They are the only state that has no provision for a concealed-carry license.

The best solution is to do like I did 40 years ago and MOVE SOMEWHERE ELSE.

A great way to get hands on training with black powder,is to find a SASS club-Single Action Shooting Soceity.I shoot that way in Ca and its so much fun.
Keep your powder dry and your aim straight.
Thank you,
Henry

You might contact the NRA and find out if there is a BP handgun firearms safety instructor in your area. Getting their text book might be a good idea as well even if you can not find a local instructor. Odd as it sounds you might contact your Boy Scouts of America district HQ to find out if they would direct you to a BP merit badge counselor who may well also be an NRA BP instructor. BSA may not want to give you a point of contact but if you ask nice who knows they might pass your request for help on to the Merit badge councilor.
