THR Posters,

I'm one of the few members of my family who hunt. I love nothing more than the excitement of the chase and thrill of the kill - besides the delicious eating, of course. :D Since my enlistment in the military, I don't get to hunt as often as I'd like to (seeing as the army for some reason is extremely anal about gun laws and restrictions thereof - seeing how well that works</sarcasm>). Yet I'm en route to a medical discharge and will be returning home just in time to catch the end of my favorite season, small game - particularly squirrel.

But for some reason my experience shows that most people just don't hunt small game. I don't really get why though. Is my favorite season that much of a rarity, or am I just not meeting other avid small game hunters? I personally enjoy the high bag limits and don't miss the hassle of tagging that comes with other seasons. In fact, I'm kind of known around my town as the guy who hunts squirrel! Why isn't this more popular?

But that's just my story, so what's your favorite season? Why do you like it?

Squirrel is my favorite game, and for the most part, the only animal I hunt these days. Squirrel season lets me experience the season change in the woods. We grow some rather large fox squirrel here in Ohio, and getting one is kind of a trophy in itself to me. It gives myself and my older brother (77) some time we can spend together without too much physical exertion for him. Cast Iron skillet with a lid, some sweet onions and a bottle of BBQ sauce makes for some really good eating.

I enjoy squirrel hunting. For years it was the only hunting that I did where I could use a rifle, deer hunting was limited to shotguns only.

This year I got interested in deer hunting again, so squirrel hunting has gotten moved to the back burner for right now. I'm sure the urge will be back soon.

I'm not sure how many squirrel hunters come into the forums, but believe me you're not the only one that loves doing that. And anyone that has the patience to out sit them or can stalk worth a darn on squirrels can certainly get a deer. Every predator in the woods go after them so they get real good at hiding.

Also a squirrel hunter when growing up in Ohio, I was surprised the taste was so good and we had little hats made out of them.

I don't know the stategies besides getting in the woods and sitting at the base of a tree while keeping a look out with family/friends. Brother, father, and I would sit on different sides of the same tree and let each other know if we saw some with slow movements...tap on the shoulder and a point in the direction.

Nice to be able to use airguns but when on my grandfather's land we would use .410 and 20 gauge shotguns.

Waterfowl, always and forever waterfowl. I love all hunting, but I just can't get too far from the salt marsh. I have marsh water in my veins. Nothing like watching a sunrise over the marsh in 40 degree weather. I just love everything about it...or I suppose a sunrise over a rag spread in a rice field. :D
