4 point when I was 16... he came running past me through the brush with a one antler broken in the skull and flopping on the off side. Rifle I was using was an 1892 Win I think, in 25-20 cal. Why that rifle? Everyone that had ever used that rifle on their first hunt had bagged their buck. 12 or 13 people by the time I came along. My younger brother was the first to break that string. (I suspect that since he was pretty into smoking illegal herb at that point in his life, he wasn't too concerned about hunting or paying much attention) That buck (prob 18 month old) had to have been in some serious pain as it took 6 well-placed shots to bring him down.
I sure don't recommend 25-20 as a deer cartridge and I think that rifle has since been put to bed. But I think it pulled down the curtains on something like 60 deer in it's career.

1968, Monterey LA, used a Ruger 44 Mag Rifle. Shot @ 30 yds while sitting on a log just at day light. 11 yrs old. Reeves Camp.

This area is now the Cocodrie National Wild Life Refuge.

This was the first time to I was allowed to sit by myself! It was cold with ice every where and that log was COLD. So I built a small twig fire as I had been taught and stayed still and warm. The tree was wind blown down and I was sitting where the branches started, the roots provided cover on the other side.
About 45 minutes after good daylight I heard twigs snapping and this spike came up on my right @ 30 yds or so feeding on acorns. I lined up the sights and squeezed the shot off. He ran 40yds and pilled up. Dad came quickly (He was close but out of site) and then we inspected my 1st deer! It was a great day.
