To make it gun related, which firearms do you see being capable of being 200-500 years old operational heirlooms?

As you can tell, I am extremely bored.:scrutiny:
 
Economic collapse.
We are getting close to the point where social programs are weighing heavily on the economic activity. Add a few more industries leaving the country to go to low-labor cost foreign countries, and its gonna get worse. Add another minimum wage increase and you are there.
 
Economic Collapse brought on by Global Warming which lead to a return to the Ice Age for most of North America and Europe and was compounded by the explosion of the Yelowstone Caldera and another New Madrid earthquake. However most of these went unnoticed since the Tsunami that resulted from the extinct caldera colapse in the Canary Islands destroyed both the Fox and CNN news centers.
 
It's happening right now. 1 foot of snow in Los Angeles. Climate changing. Polarity switching. Dawn of new Ice age. Global warming (OK, no ice age). People will be aware of it in 2012 - the same year the Mayan Calender stops - and by then, my retirement will disappear and I'll have to work again... Aieeeeeeeee!!!!! :)
 
Zombies on the lawn, staggering around. Reptile wisdom. Plaster falling down in pieces by the couch of pain.

A .38 Special, up on the shelf, of course.
 
It's not usually the whole world at once; it's usually one area that goes to hell for a while.
Usually the immediate reason is some war, originally brought on by other kinds of bad behavior like racism or inflation or whatever.
I don't see that happening in the USA unless there's a nuclear war. Just remember that within our lifetimes, it really has been TEOTWAWKI for Cambodia, Lebanon, Afghanistan (more than once), Bosnia, Rwanda, Congo... Maybe those are the people who really need to be armed.
 
Y'know, it's funny you should mention this.

Having recently re-read S.M. Stirling's Island In The Sea Of Time books, I was chatting with my housemate about what kind of guns would be best for a town suddenly teleported into the Bronze Age. His first instinct was to mention Glocks, but I retorted that parts wear out, and small bits on a Glock would require elaborate stamping machinery to replace, while those on a 1911 would require only a guy with some barstock, a file, and a lot of time on his hands...

It seems like a big chunk of space junk could make for some interesting times

People have been around for more or less 50,000 years.
In that time frame, theres been a few "disasters" that have reordered the status quo
but nothing like the event that toppled the dinosaurs

If the Ort cloud sheds some cosmic debris our way,
a 38 snubbie might be all you need

I don't have a scenario, but it seems as tho AK's are being made and repaired today by folks in parts of the world where the S hits their F near continuously: wars, natural disasters, no functioning economies and close to bronze age living conditions, so maybe I'd pick that gun-wise.

Heck, maybe I should buy that, gun-wise.
 
One seriously pissed off guy with the right equipment taking out power grids & expensive switching equipment in low income neighborhoods / areas, then driving to the next city and doing it again and again. Resulting riots cause massive destruction as power is unable to be restored due to cascading failures when enough equipment is destroyed.

Panic causes a massive shutdown of business as people either tune in to watch what's going on, or are unable to get to work due to safety concerns / lack of transportation / family matters / etc. Copycat / anarchists / other idiots decide to follow suit ala "UC" and we wind up with martial law covering several states / regions.

Martial law results in more panic / liberal bedwetting & general realization that maybe the 5 day waiting period was a bad idea when the country is on lockdown and you have rioters a few streets away.

Past that, in descending order of probability: massive deliberate attack by terrorists using unconventional weapons; dirty bomb; or chem / bio / vector agent attack on populace centers.
 
A brain virus PATHOGEN brought to earth by the GIANT SPACE BUNNIES FROM JUPITER creates ZOMBIES and gives all REPTILES WISDOM forcing Dubya to ENFORCE THE PATRIOT ACT to extremes never envisioned. While we are all focused on these problems we all forget to vote, exept the ZOMBIES who elect HILLARY IN 2008. The resulting ECONOMIC COLLAPSE PISSES some GUY OFF enough that he goes around the country in low income ares TURNING OFF THE POWER gid, resulting in riots and martial law across the globe and eventually turns into global NUCLEAR WAR. The heat and sismic vibrations from every bomb in the world going off at roughly the same time turns Mt St Helen into a SUPER VOLCANO which empties half of the contents of the Earth's core, skewing the Earths rotation and tilt changing the gravitational forces in the solar system and creating devastating SOLAR FLARES which is good because it's the last good beach day left as the NUCLEAR WAR and SUPER VOLCANO ejecta has already triggered the next ICE AGE. All this compounded by the fact that 10 minutes after HILLARY takes office IN 2008 She ,with the cooperation of U.N.president Osama Bin Laden, enlists the help of the ENWISENED REPTILES to confiscate all modern fire arms in the world in sweeping raids on unsuspecting non lizard fearing citizens. And since GOALIE'S WIFE FOUND OUT ABOUT HIS C&R weapons are too scarce to even consider.
As the gun grabbing raids are winding down a small group of lizards stop to take a recreation break, after Louie looses a game of Truth or Dare he has to GNAW OFF THE LAST LEG OF THE WHITE BUFFALO. And as we all know that's bad medicine so guns would be useless anyway. But in the end it won't matter because I would have died from a heart attack right after the lizard asked me for a Budwieser.

I see economic decline and urban race riots, but that will always happen every few decades. Such events classify as SHTF, but not TEOTWAWKI.

Guns? First rule is to have a gun w/ ammo. Remember that alot of those Korean shopowners had survived the LA riots with just ordinary shotguns.

That would be a flintlock musket. A flintlock musket can be kept operational by learning how to knap flints, cast ball, and make blackpowder.

Don't laugh, a flintlock musket would be good for hunting and pest control around the family farm so that the modern guns and ammo can be reserved for real emergencies.

probly the only gun I got that would last 200-500 years (with lots of care and minimal use) would be a SS ruger Service Six, maybe the SKS would make it too. Everything else is aluminum, plastic, or MIM and I don't think designed for that kind of service life.
 
All you have to do is look back into history to see what could happen. Most of the conflicts in the past have been civil wars. In the U.S. that would mean a group of people in the Southwest deciding that they need a new independent country (Atzlan). It could also mean several states deciding that the Federal government has gotten too big for its britches and refuse enough federal mandates that the Feds come in and take over state government and the people resist this. Is there any historical evidence of a natural disaster causing a country or its government to collapse?
As far as economic disasters are concerned, their effect is to bring in a totalitarian government such as the Nazis in pre-WW2 or communists in WW1.
