I have an accademic question for you all.

Imagine that in some hypothetical situation, you had to choose between two rifles for defence; they are both the same type of action, and both in a sub-par caliber. The difference is that one rifle holds two more rounds (tube fed) but is much slower to reload Vs. the other rifle (detachable box magazine)

What rifle would you choose and why? Would you go for the increased capacity or for the greater speed of reloading?

Since it's strictly a defensive situation, speed of reloading is probably the better choice.

The "however" is that of shootability of the rifle and your own proficiency and training. You can always top off a tube mag, as is done with shotguns. You also have to figure mag capacity in your scenario; with something like the typical lever action, you're limited--which can be bad if your scenario calls for sustained rapid fire.

I tend to believe that if you can't get the job done in ten or twenty rounds, you don't need more ammo: You need more shooters on your side.

The other problem is this: if your mag gets damaged and it's a tube mag, that's it, game over. A damaged or fouled box mag can be easily swapped out. BSW

If the larger capacity rifle only has 2 more rounds, I'll take the faster reloads. I would take the larger capacity if there was a greater difference in the number of rounds, but I'm not sure how much greater before I would choose it.

For a defensive rifle, the box magazine.

Also, realistically, a box-magazine-fed rifle can accept magazines of any size, and extended mags are available for most rifles.
