Your preference for a combat rifle

Like the FAL. I got the furniture set, just haven't got the rest of the stuff yet so I can change it over and get rid of the thumb hole.

This is the SAR 4800-Match that I was talking about in post # 13

Oh ... what the heck! Let's just go for what we would like in the field regardless of caliber or weight. This is what I would want. I just might pursue it in the years to come.

OM .50 "NEMESIS currently under development.

M14/M1 with an EOTech. Works good, dead nuts accurate within 200 yards, 1 round stopping power. Alternative would be an AK-47, not as accurate, but works good too...

+1 with the M14/ M1A crowd...Scout Length..and slap an EoTech on her fer luck....

I'm really quite happy with my .308 tanker M1. I've never been in combat (the tanker might well have, in a previous life as a Rifle, Caliber .30, M1), but I think it would do just fine there if I did my part.

That rifle you show is bad ass! I like it!

Thanks! It's my pride n' joy of all my rifles and I like to show it off any chance I get. :D I agree with your iron-sights preference; I like to keep my FAL as simple as possible in the unfortunate/unlikely case I ever have to really use it in a nasty-less-than-ideal SHTF situation. As for recoil, I've kinda fixed that with the muzzle brake, but the trade off is increased (perceived) report and rearward debris kick-up when firing prone.

All in all, I'm quite happy with it.

TennTucker, glad to see others here with SAR4800s, they appear to be a rarity as far as FAL clones go. I've noticed mine is quite the tack-driver as far as FALs go. With that scope, what kind of accuracy have you managed to squeeze out of yours?

Snowdog, how heavy was that dragon after you dressed it out?

Preacherman, tell me more about those .224 75 gr. HPs. I hadn't heard.

Ok thats enough thread highjacking for now, my job is done here. Oh wait, if I say FN2000 then I'm ok right?

My best grouping is 3/4" @ 100 yds. It shoots better that I do. A real shooter might do same hole. I guess I can live with it though. :D

The other consideration is your physical dimensions and overall strength. If you are big and strong, an M1A or FN-FAL are my top choices (heck, the AR10 as well). I go with the FAL due to simplicity and .308 power. However, I can see toward the future, say when I hit 60 or 70 years old when the ten-pound FAL will be handed off to a youngster and I'll be carrying whatever sub-.30 caliber carbine is in vogue in the year 2030. Currently, the AR15 platform is great for small men or women (or future freedom-fighter-geezers like me one day).

Next consideration is your load-out. How much ammo will you be carrying and how will you carry it? I have a MESA vest from Practical Tactical.net

Mine, with eight FAL mags, med kit, Camelback water bladder, etc weighs in at 25 pounds. My A-III backpack weighs in at an additional 25 pounds, including water. That's as much as I'd ever want to carry.

Robinson Armament's new XCR in 6.5 Grendel.

Why RA XCR? Modular, with easily switchable barrel lengths and calibers, and Picatinny rails for various optics. Ambidextrous, with selector and magazine and bolt release operable by either hand. Charging handle on left and right ejection is only concession to the fact that realistically there are only 15% lefties out there (not including switching shooting shoulders for tactical reasons). Ergonomic, with mag release in same easy spot as AR series, and bolt release in a better position at rear of mag well. Stock folds for portability. OK, stock shape could be better or at least have a foam sleeve for comfortable cheek weld. Reliable, don't yet know without test results, although I'm very pleased it has a gas-piston system, for what that's worth.

Why 6.5 Grendel? Twice the lead of 5.56 for increased wounding and penetration capability, yet fits in same size rifle. Much more flexible than 6.8 SPC (actually handles the full range of standard 6.5 bullets, from 70 grains to 156, but let's say a standard military loading would be a 125- or 130-grain bullet). Shoots flatter and with less wind-drift than 5.56, 6.8, and 7.62. For you .308 fans, the 6.5 Grendel shoots a 144-grain FMJBT flatter and with less drift than M80 and its 147-grain FMJ. The same thing, only better?

I'd feel very confident with an 6.5 Grendel XCR at any conceivable engagement range, against a wide variety of armored and unarmored opponents, both in the open and behind cover.

The .243 mag is the .240 Weatherby........or that's what I always thought anyways. Is there something new?

btw........240 Weatherby is an awesome round. I owned one for about 15 years.

ZPO, an FN2000 in 6.5 Grendel would just go to show that history repeats itself! After the British studied everything that everybody learned about small-arms combat all over the world during World War 2, they came up with the .280 British. And FN offered their early version FN FAL in it for the NATO weapons trials which eventually went in favor of a rehashed .30-06, the .308 Win.

Anyway, the 6.5 Grendel, in its case shape and relative case size-to-exposed-bullet ratio looks remarkably like a scaled-down .280 British, and inherits the same embodiment of the world's best thinking on a general-purpose small-arms cartridge for assault rifles, light and medium machine guns, and designated marksman rigs.

So, if you have FN chamber the 6.5 Grendel in the FN2000, you're getting back, finally, to where we always should have been!

Scale down a FAL to 6.5 Grendel. A little shorter, make the lower aluminum, and with a 16 - 18" barrel and the mags capable of holding more ammo due to smaller cartridge. This should be good to 300 Meters.

m16 WITH cleaning kit, acog optics, and enough ammo to start WWIII

I would pick an m16 because
-its PROVEN prestine accuracy,
-knolegde that i can hit things past 300yrds.
-full auto, i know if i need the firepower ITS there.
-low recoil, staying on target will not be a problem.
-Light weight, including ammo

i would have picked the g36 but i dont know enough about. i would feel more confortable with an m16

For CQB i would pick none other than the MP5

Plasma rifle, in the 40 megawatt range....
Oh, sorry, real world.

DSA FAL carbine

Derby Fals, that's not a Maus.....this is The Maus, also a good "gun".

Don't know why the Russians repainted her....or when. Only one in existance.
