OK, here we go again... I just went through this exercise for myself in 9 mm, and am now starting this discussion on behalf of a buddy who hasn't carried concealed for years (since he was a DA's investigator) but is now considering packing again. (He's in East Texas... so it gets hot there!). He's always been partial to .45s and I'm guessing he'll remain loyal. If it were me, I'd get a Kimber Ultra Carry II and be done with it... :D

But please list your best recommendations in single-action, DA/SA, and DA only. I'll copy him on this thread link and get him to join the forum.

Glock(DAO), Sig(SA/DA), HK, XD(DAO), almost all 1911's. All have the pro's and con's. All are excellent reliable firearms. It is really up to him which fit's/feel's best in his hands and which he perfers to shoot.

I know this is not a very percise post but it is the truth.

I personally have a Glock 30SF.

My picks for CCW?

STI Off Duty (TX made!) for SA
or
Glock 30/36 for DA

There's not a .45 DA/SA that I particularly like for CCW, unless you want to carry a full-size.

I use a Springfield Micro-Compact 1911. Works in most circumstances. Still haven't grown completely comfortable carrying a locked/cocked SA auto.

Not a bad choice Kentucky Windage, you've almost got it right. Make it a pre-series II (or series 1 if you will) Kimber Ultra or compact and you've hit the nail right on the head.

XD 45 Compact: 4.75" tall, 10+1 capacity, but fairly wide. Very concealable.

SIG P220 & P220 Carry: Just pure awesomeness

Glock 30 & 30 SF: Concealable, but wide. Downside is how the magazine extends up into the grip. Caused finger pinches, some of which bled. Kinda annoying.

Glock 36: Another mini-45.

Kahr P45: Mini-45

S&W M&P 45: Another good one that's very concealable. Optional thumb safety. 8+1 cap.

S&W 625 / 25: Six shot revolver that takes moonclips. Very nice.

FYI, he feels he shoots 45s better than 9s. I suspect that's because of familiarity with the 1911 platform, but I'm not certain. Oddly enough, I do, too --but that's because I first learned to shoot handguns eons ago with a 1911 (in the military, of course... back when they carried REAL handguns) :neener:

My Kimber Eclipse II is the most accurate handgun I own, but it's not exactly a CCW gun. I have a Kahr MK9 on the way for my own CCW purposes... in addition to a S&W 640-2.

I carry a XD45 compact. 10+1 capacity, affordable, striker fired, no external safeties, available in 4" or 5" barrel and a variety of colors/finishes. It conceals easily in a crossbreed supertuck.

My carry is a Sig P220. I got it because it was stone-axe reliable and extremely accurate (more importantly I should say it points naturally and makes holes right where I want them)

I've never once considered it a DA/SA gun. I thumb the hammer back on the way up like it was an SA revolver. Super simple.

But if he's a big fan of 1911 pattern guns (I am too, it's just not my carry choice), then all the rest of this is just flapping our gums, er, poking the keyboard.

I used to carry this

I now carry a Kobra Carry or EMP

For holsters i use Milt Sparks VMII's (most of the time) or a SuperTuck

Do we have a price range?
Any info towards what he likes/dislikes?

Its just that there is alot out there in the .45 field.....

I know... I'm waiting for him to elaborate on preferences. I suspect he hasn't looked at many of the newer offerings in DA/SA and DAO as he hasn't carried in many years.

We're developing quite a nice list so far. Personally, I'm partial to Kimbers, but man that Kobra looks nice... How does it shoot?

1st choice - SIG P245
.
2nd choice - Colt Officer's
.
3rd choice - Colt Commander
.
4th choice - Bul Commander Hi-Cap

it's a great shooter. accurate. out of the box reliable. excellent trigger (3.5#) & fitting. the bobtail makes it just as comfy as my EMP to carry.
