Your preferred rubber and/or wood grips on S&W .357?

I have a large bag full of rugger grips that i immediately take off my guns. I prefer smooth wood stocks and use what fits me, factory Combats, Herrets, Badgers, Ropers, etc.

grips

i am partial to hogue rubber grips. if hogue makes 'em for the guns i own, i put 'em on. i even put 'em on my AR-15.
for me, they are less prone to slippage if your hands get wet or sweaty. the finger grips promotes consistancy. you grip the gun pretty much the same way every time which equals consistancy.

bd... I've settled on my favorite rubber grips: Pachmayr Compac SK/C, as shown here... they feel excellent, fill the hand beautifully, tame recoil very well, not bulky, conceal well, and look great. Most unfortunately, however, they don't make this grip to fit my square butt 686 and no other rubber grip feels as good to me, so I'm looking for wood grips for the sq. butt 686.

I tried the SK/CP Professional (which leaves an open backstrap) but find them too thin side to side, not very hand filling, and a bit on the hard side.

Now I'm also looking for beautiful, comfy wood grips for the 65. Leaning toward Hogue, Ahrends, and Bang!

It's funny how different we all can be... I was considering converting my square butt 6" 686 to a round butt, except I didn't want to whack into the frame of a perfectly good gun. I don't mind the square frame so much on a target or full size gun, but I wouldn't like a square butt on my J's or shorter barrel K's. Nice thing is for those who like square butts, you can buy conversion grips to make a round K or L grip feel like a square. Something for everybody! ;)

Rubber grips increase group size over firmer grips.

Pachmayr and Uncle Mike's killed the gripmaking industry off except for a few like Herret's, Eagle, Badger, Ajax... there used to be scores of makers out there!

I usually end up taking the factory wood grips down in size ( I have smaller hands ) and leaving them smooth or sometimes stippled so I can correct my grip as I draw. Finger grips get rasped off immediately as they are cut for larger hands.

IMHO rubber grips are an ABOMINATION!!!!

Another vote for the ugly Compac sk/c grips on my 2 1/2" model 66 or 4" 629 Mountain Revolver. This is the only rubber grip with padding on the back strap for round butt S&W's . It REALLY helps on the magnum loads. I think they actually made Decellerator Grippers too for these models, haven't seen them though! ;)

Funny I've never paid as much attention to custom grips on revolvers like I do on 1911's. I have Hogue rubber grips on my 686 which I think are great. However I may need to look into those Nils grips, they're just beautiful.

I've always stuck with S&W not necessarily the shipping grips

I've always stuck with S&W not necessarily the shipping grips. In part that's because I can usually see a sample on something in the gunshops first. I'd like to handle Spegal boot grips or some of the other exotics but not enough to order them and wait in hopes I'll like the fit. Quite sure the quality will show.

Herret's aside is there anybody out there doing custom work along the line of Fuzzy Farant's (query spelling) old work? There seems to be lots of ways to pick fancy wood but few to specify a size and balance for one hand two hand or weak hand.

Gordon... yes, the SK/C is a phenomenal grip indeed... and for a rubber grip, I think they even look good! I can't imagine a better rubber grip for a round butt K. Of course for stunning looks, wood is fantastic and I'm excited to get some great wood grips for my various J's, K's, and L.

Don't overlook these grips made by Bang!, Inc. Designed by Mr. Jerry Miculek, they are utlitarian-looking but extremely comfortable, both when shooting full-house loads as well as when it's next to your ribs under your shirt, sitting at the Diner. I buy mine from http://alscustom.com Al Greco, a friend and teammate of Jerry's.

I like the looks of wood stocks, but rubber does make a revolver more controllable.
S&W 640-1, 2 1/8 inch barrel - Uncle Mike's rubber boot stocks
S&W 19-3, 4 inch barrel - Herret's target wood stocks
Ruger GP-100, 6 inch barrel - Ruger wood/rubber combination stocks
Colt Python, 6 inch barrel - Colt wood stocks
Colt Python, 8 inch barrel - Colt wood stocks
S&W 29-3, 6 inch barrel - Pachmeyer rubber stocks
Ruger Super Redhawk, 7 1/2 inch barrel - Ruger wood/rubber combination stock.

I like Pachmayers on my revolvers. I find that I can control the weapon better with rubber grips. I save my wood grips, but I don't shoot with them. They can be pretty though.

I love the look of real wood grips on pretty much any gun, including my smith revolvers. Revolvers just look "right" with wood grips. On any higher caliber gun (.41 Mag or bigger) I like a Rubber grip, ONLY because they are more forgiving on my wrists. And when I go target shooting I like to shoot alot. :)
