I too believe you’re described a .243 in a used, inexpensive bolt action.
My favorite is a discontinued Marlin X7S.
Accurate, inexpensive, available. Effective!!!

Nice gun. I was taught at a young age with a bolt action apeture sight when I first started shooting by my Dad. Learned the art of one shot one kill. Taking my time, feeling the wind, the sun etc. Seems almost a lost art. I taught my son the same way. Seems a lot of folks want to start kid off with Ar's and other semi-auto's. You see so many now just thowing lead down range like it was nothing. Thanks for the Post, that is a really nice looking rifle. (I also think a single shot Henry would be a nice gun for folks to learn on.Might even save a little on cash.).

I was taught by some very good riflemen to be a very good rifleman using a bolt action single loaded. My WWII vet Great Uncle would hand me one .22 shell at a time. My reward for killing a gopher or blackbird was 2 extra ones to load in the magazine and practice on a pop can as far away as I dared. 2 hits got me 2 more shells so long as I took 5 steps back, a miss took the rifle away for the day, passing the 50 yard mark got me a fresh can of pop. I'm in Jebs camp on this one. The easiest way to teach fire discipline is to remove the temptation of easy follow up shots.
