Have to agree with Slow55, go with a singleshot. The rifle is less expensive and a great way to teach your kids about safety, hunting and shooting.

I just bought my son a Savage model 11 youth rifle with accu-trigger in .243 a few months ago for his 9th birthday. It's a great shooting rifle, but it kicks fairly hard as far as .243's go. He doesn't enjoy shooting it much. I don't understand why, but they don't put a recoil pad on the youth rifle. Plus the gun is very light weight. I'd like to put a recoil pad on it for him, but then the LOP would be that of a standard adult rifle and wouldn't fit him.

For simplicity, functionality and safety, I like single shots for a kid.
The H&R or New England Handi-Rifle youth size is a great starter.
those H&R single shot rifles have a brrl purchase program so you can upgrade to another caliber later. Who gets a fast second shot anyway on them leapin' critters
