Hey guys,

Been on these forums for a while but this is my first post. Very different guns, but I have been debating between the yugo m48 and the west german P1. I will likely buy both of these in the next year or two so I really just want to avoid buying one and having the other go up in value significantly before I grab it. Any reasons that I should buy one before the other?

Consider a WWII P-38 instead of the P1. The P-38 will appreciate at a greater rate.

If you're still set on the M48 and P1, which both are plentiful, I think I'd get the M48 first. I may be wrong but I have a hunch the P1s will be available longer.

Thanks for the advice! I've considered the P38 but I'm afraid it will end up in the safe most of the time along with my grandfathers k98. Was looking for post war versions that I wouldn't mind shooting.

A quick look on Gunbroker show quite a few Yugo M48s on sale for under $300. Most appear to be in good shape and would probably make for a decent shooter. Not a lot of Walther P1s for sale and they seem to be priced quite a bit more than the Yugo M48s. I would probably go with a P1 now as their prices look to be going up appreciably more in the near future. My current P1 was actually made in France by Manurhin and has a bit of interesting history to go with it. Makes for an excellent surplus shooter as well.

Both have been around for 20+ years as surplus and the prices are what they are, so I think it's a fair assumption that neither is going to appreciate "off scale" anytime soon. Both are step-children firearms, meaning that each is a "continued production" of a more famous sibling. The money and appreciation will always be in the original examples. The Kar-98K you have should be shot, BTW. Careful shooting does nothing to damage them. Since you have a Mauser already, I would grab the pistol first.

And welcome aboard.

8mm ammo has gotten rather expensive so I wouldn't choose the Mauser if you want a shooter.

I would say take a P38, and you can still shoot them without worry. There are great guns and not that much more expensive. Wish I would have done that but I still love my P1. I would say get the P1 first, I have been seeing less and less of them at gun shows.

Check Guns America... search P1. There's a seller, Robertson Trading Post, that has a number of them.

I still suggest a P-38. You won't be sorry. I have three and shoot them often.

I always heard that a P-1 will allow you eight warning shots and one aimed throw. :D

That's been the experience with mine. Maybe the sights are just tuned differently on them, but mine hits EXTREMELY low. First time I took it out I had a cardboard box with a brick in the bottom to stablize it. Target nailed to the top with about 3-4" of gap between the target and bottom of box. Carefully aimed, pulled the trigger, and the box went spinning around as the bullet impacted the brick about 10" lower than where I was aiming. I've got ~7 other 9mm's and not a single one hits as low as that P-1.

If they ever achieve price parity with the PPQ I'll be selling it to fund one of those :).
