I got my Kali-approved Yugo SKS this week, and in the box is a little grey logbook. I've been trying to use online dictionaries to translate it, but it's hit and miss-some words are translated, and a few are good guesses.

Plus, I'm not certain that it is entirely one language; I tried some Slovak/English dictionaries, and found little, but I've had more successes with Serbo-Croatian/English translators (not many of those). Since Yugoslavia was a Soviet creation, I don't know if the language would have been an amalgamation, too, and if I should be searching for Montenegran, Bosnian, and Macedonian dictionaries as well.

I understand that it's a maintainence logbook, and I could leave it at that, I suppose. But I really enjoy knowing the history of my firearms, especially the Commie ones. Is anyone here knowledgable about those languages, or know a tranlation of the log?

Also, I'd like to get more information on my particular rifle. The serial number is M-512XXX.

Thanks.

It should definatly be Serbo-Croation as that is (or at least was) the official language at the time and place. But, that doesnt mean that all the entries will be in that language either. Since you are using online translators I am going to assume that it certainly isnt in a cryllic (sp) alphabet so that leaves out Russian. A lot of the language in the manual is likely to be include technical terms that may not be easily found in an online translator.

I think your best bet is to scan a page and post it on some of the larger gun boards to see if anyone there speaks the language (I remember that ak-47.net used to have a contingent of bosnians who were translating these very books in the past). Good luck.

Since Yugoslavia was a Soviet creation
It was a creation of Marshall Tito and the Soviets had little to to with it, other than try to bring them under control. Tito and the Yugo Communist Party were the glue that held the nation together.

Can you scan the book and show that to various online translation sites?

Actually, the nation of Yugoslavia was a creation of post-WWI Wilsonianism, IIRC. Tito came to be in charge after WWII. The Yugo communist state was his creation.
