My local shop has the cover with a rail mounted to it for $45. I was told it may or may not fit my Yugo and if it did it would still take me about an hour with a file to make it work right. There's got to be a cheaper, better solution. Any suggestions?

A scout mount using the original rear sight frame would be more accurate if made properly. The rear cover mount is not always consistent because of slight movement.

I believe I got the same mount you are talking about,$45 at a gun show (two years back)includes a china made unknown brand (4X?) shorty scope.
This did not work as well as the factory iron sights (and I have crummy bifocal eyes) for me,zero was all over the place even when I tried to shim the cover so it wouldn't slop around as much.
The mount was certainly sloppy but I came to the conclusion that the scope itself might have been at fault.I have always meant to try it with a different scope of known quality.
What I ended up doing was getting the lyman micromter peep sight from Brownells (lymans makes the same sight with many different bases, one is listed for the sks) along with drills and taps.I clamped the sucker in a vise and went to town with my drillpress. I usually wouldn't do this work myself but the sight alone cost 2/3 what the rifle did and I wanted to get out cheep.I thought that with a cheep yugo I could risk it.
This actually works quite well, one of these days I need to get a better trigger or find someone to work on mine.
I have since seen a peep sight made for the sks that mounts somehow at the back of the spring cover. Looks like it isn't actually on the cover but behind it somehow useing the rear pin to mount.
I have seen the "peep" sights that mount in the regular rear sight but never thought that would be much of an improvement over the factory sights.just too far foward and too close to the front sight.
At the time I bought my first Yugo I was flabbergasted to find under all that cosmo a brand new unissued gun.I didn't have much spare cash at the time but went back and bought another. Darn friend talked me out of it,wish I had bought a bunch more.
Another buddy has a real beat up china made sks that somebody in his family bought years back for $69.It looks horrible but has a pretty good trigger and shoots way beter than my brand new yuogs.Considering the crummy sights it really is a tackdriver. (well almost!)

Sounds like this might be what you're thinking of:

If so, that's a Tech Sights TS200.

The receiver cover and the gas tube are the two least stable platforms for mounting an optic. Remember, even the slightest, most invisible movement of the optic will throw your shots into huge groups. Like the 30 round magazines, I have seen very few positive reviews of these mounts. There are a few solid mounting options though.

Choate and ATI make solid receiver mounts. The Chaote unit is the better choice in my opinion, as it lets you remove the receiver cover for cleaning, where the ATI unit needs to be removed first. This means reinstalling and rezeroing every time you clean the gun. The downside is that they both need a little work to install, including drilling/tapping holes and relieving a bit of material from your stock to allow room for the mount.

Millet and another company who's name eludes me at the moment make mounts that replace the rear sight. I have the Millett unit on the SKS I use for brush hunting and it works well, though unlike the other, better, unit, it needs removed to remove the gas tube for cleaning.

You can also attach a side rail to the gun, allowing you to use optics and mounts made for side rails. Kalinka Optics is a source for them. Tantal also has the rails and can order various optics to fit them.

Those Tech Sights are really amazing units. Combine one with the KNS crosshair front site and you'll wonder why you ever considered optics in the first place. That's as accurate as an iron sighted SKS is ever going to get.

i have a reciever cover scope mount that was sold to me for about the same. i cant remember the name... 'sport something or other'. anywho, the cover fit just fine on my yugo, and im sure they didnt have that in mind when selling it to me. maybe theyd let you try it on....

Those scope mounts built onto the cover are tripe. You're not going to be able to keep a zero with them.

I personally stuck a tech-sight on mine and had no problem with loss of zero. You could also stick on a fibre optic front sight post for a good clearly visible sights with a longer distance and a remarkable improvement of accuracy over the default sights.
