Yugo underfolder as HD?

I have been throwing around the idea of a 7.62 cal designated HD for a while. Any forum members here have a Yugo underfolder or AK as their primary HD weapon? What are the pros and cons of the Yugo and the AK weapon system in general? Also, who has got good deals on the Yugo or similar AK right now? It might just become a lil Xmas present. I have one in 5.56. I had one in 7.62x39. It was plenty accurate and fun for shooting. It is just rough as a cob. Perhaps if you get one homebuilt on a NDS receiver and take the time to polish it before bluing you will have something you will like.

As far as the use to which you intend to put it, be aware that the choice of bullets is critical here. If you can find a TAP equivalent bullet I think your choice is just fine. A flash hider is also a good idea should the unfortunate ever happen at night.

I think it is a good choice, although I still favor the 5.56 round in this capacity.

I plan to use JHP or something frangible if I can find it. Im not sure if Hornady makes a TAP round for the 7.62 x 39, my guess is not. I might also consider putting some 7.62 FMJ in the mag in case the BG's are wearing vests.

I like the compactness of a folder. Are there any other AK folders that are equal or of better quality than the Yugo? Thanks again for your input.

When you have one of the Yugo AK47's from Classic Arms, can you add a red dot to it and still be legal, or since it is imported, does it have to keep the iron sights only?

Wolf MC HP is more than enough for most defensive jobs involving an AK, but I'm not sure if it's really the best choice, unless you're dealing with some sort of an assault right out of a Bruce Willis shoot-'em-up.

Yes, you want to be alive, but no, you don't want a politically motivated DA looking at your weapon of choice and thinking big press out of possible charges against you. And yes, it does happen, and it's unfortunate, but the image of mall and high school mass murderers and their weapons of choice are on the minds of most potential jurors.

I think you are taking this way out of context, especially if you live in a state with castle doctrine.

If you are at home asleep in your bed, and someone breaks in on you with the intent to do harm, you can kill them in most states legally, and don't have anything to fear. Its really going to be hard to make a case against a peaceful homeowner assaulted in his own castle.

Go with an SKS. Cheaper and if you shoot someone, it won't be so much of a loss when the police/sheriff impound it as evidence.

Think outside the box. Criminally, you get off. And then the "victim's" family comes after you for being an overly prepared, bloodthirsty type who was just waiting for that special someone who was "turning his life around" to break down the door.

It's advice. They don't have to heed it. I have EBRs, and yes, I'd use one to defend myself in a heartbeat. But I'm not sure that it's a great HD choice. Perhaps this person is in a one-gun situation ($) and looking for some range fun, as well. Who knows? If it were me, I'd have a somewhat plain, short (<20" bbl) 12 gauge instead.

Red Dot sights aren't part of the percentage of parts so you should be okay. I have a Polish underfolder, and it shoots fantastically. There's a little bit of a problem with overpenetration, but it's not insurmountable. The flash isn't that bad either. I have an AK pistol with the slightly loner 12.5" barrel, and I switched the stock muzzlebrake with a reproduction Krinkov type. The fireball went from almost basketball size to about apple sized, witout flashblinding me at night, and, additionally, the recoil is quite managable, enabling it to be fired one handed. Tap is probably better than something like Glaser, which might not cycle the action. It's wise to try whatever ammo beforehand, to make sure it works, even though it may be expensive. As for accuracy, an AK is accurate enough for HD situations.

Sights are not listed in the 922r law. Nor are bayonet lugs, grenade launchers or vertical foregrips.

(a) No person shall assemble a semiautomatic rifle or any shotgun
using more than 10 of the imported parts listed in paragraph (c) of this
section if the assembled firearm is prohibited from importation under
section 925(d)(3) as not being particularly suitable for or readily
adaptable to sporting purposes.

Rifles for SD and apartments don't mix, personally even if I had a family and lived in a house I would still choose a handgun and hp ammo over any rifle. I've never been a big fan of rifles for home defense, with the right training its possible but its still not as practical as a handgun IMHO.

Luckily I live quite aways from neighbors - otherwise I would not have considered the 7.62. On the other hand, the 5.56 does quite well in an urban environment for HD purposes. I just feel the need to have something that just wont bounce off vests. These days you hear more and more of BGs wearing bullet resistant vests and tactical gear. But each man to himself.

I've just about finished my version of a 7.62mm x 39 AK HD rifle.

It's a Poly Tech MAK-90 and I just installed AK-L/U railed hand guards from FAB DEFENSE.
The red dot optic is a Burris FastFire and I have a Streamlight TLR-1 inbound.

I'm staying with the thumb hole stock because I really like my 100% Chinese trigger and mags.
I will shorten the butt stock and add a nice recoil pad soon.
