All of the M57s I have handled had so much cosmaline in the FP channel the spring and FP had to be removed and cleaned. Serious drag on ignition system. Once cleaned all ran well.

I've got a couple, both work fine. The positioning and function of the manual safeties I certainly prefer over those slapped on the Polish and Romanian imports.

Will it fully seat if you depress the mag release while you are inserting it?

One method of discovering the reason for such a hangup is to lock the slide open and look down at the top of the mag as you insert it.

Try holding the release in as you insert the mag.
