My Zeiss Conquest 6.5-20X50 scope crapped out over the weekend. 14 inches left at 100 yards and no way to get it to zero. Just a few months old I thought but I called Zeiss and they told me its 5 years old and they don't make them in the US any more and they don't support the line. Anyway so much for Zeiss quality. So they tell me to send it in and they will send me a new Conquest HD5 5-25X50 but they don't make them in mil dot. The service tech recommended their Rapid Z1000 reticle as a substitute. I have been using Mil Dot just because I'm used to it. Anyone know anything about the Rapid Z reticles? I sure don't.

I have four Zeiss scopes with RZ reticles, three with the RZ600 and one with the RZ800. I consider them to be among the best hunting scopes around. I have a 3-9X (RZ600) on my Talkeetna chambered in .375 H&H and have shot hundreds of rounds through that rifle with no issues at all. The other three are on a .300 Win Mag, 300 WSM and .308 Win, also with no issues. I use the calculator on Zeiss' website to figure out the magnification to set the scope to such that the stadia line up out to 600 or 800 yards with my handloads. It has worked really well for me. However, I'd run some real-world numbers before choosing the RZ1000 reticle.

Here's the view through the Conquest on my Talkeetna. The target (8" circle) is at 400 yards and the power is set to 7.5X which is where the 250gr (2800 fps) load lines up with the stadia. I've validated the load/reticle at 100, 200, 350, 400 and 450 yards.

The more I'm reading about the Rapid Z 1000 the more I'm excited to get it. Looks like i can tailor loads and mag levels to give exact drop characteristics on the reticle.

Like I said, you need to check how well the stadia line up with your load. I want the stadia to line up at the highest magnification possible. That's why I like the RZ600 the best, followed by the RZ800 which is better with high velocity, high BC magnum cartridges.

The RZ1000 is great. I have one on my 6.5 Grendel and it's nearly dead on at 8.5x. Zeiss has an online calculator to help figuring drop out for almost any cartridge.

While not a replacement for a FFP mil-dot reticle, the Rapid Z 800 does work nicely from a BDC perspective. I do own one, but the majority of my go-to precision optics, contain a Mil hash type reticle. If Zeiss is offering a new scope for free...jump on it.

Im not a fan of FFP scopes. The ones Ive used the reticle covered up too much real estate on high power and were too small on low. With the info from Zeiss by load it should be pretty easy to get it on target at long range. I'm excited about this.
