Zero change?

I was told that when you shoot with a sling your zero changes from when you shoot with out one

Depends on how the sling is mounted. If either end of it is attached to the barrel, then yes it will change the POI. Using a sling also changes how you hold the rifle. Generally, using a sling will steady the rifle more than not using it. Try it with the sling and without and see what happens. You'll likely be converted.
The proper way to use a sling is to put your fore hand through the sling and then back around so the sling is on your upper arm snuggly but not tight and you can easily hold the forestock. Shoulder the rifle and it should be comfortable and the sights more steady.

Most slings are attached to the forearm. If the forearm is touching the barrel, there will be a different force on the barrel between using the sling and not using the sling. This will affect the point of impact.

If you sight in without the sling, and then shoot with the sling, you won't hit where you expect. Generally.

A rifle with a free-floated stock won't have this problem.

Sling swivel

Also be sure your front sling swivel mounting stud/screw isn't so long that it contacts the barrel as this will definitly make you frown in constarnation.
