"The rabid gun world -- including the variety of knee-jerk nutjobs in this very thread
who have gone nuclear with their comments"

Well, this "knee-jerk nutjob" has been watching the "Rabid" anti-2A crowd attacking us for decades,
along with many millions of my "knee-jerk nut job" friends, and were getting REALLY tired
of this crap.

It doesn't surprise me one bit that there's been a verbal nuclear explosion over this.

I just got through listening to the Guntalk Podcast. I listen every week BTW.

I didn't want to come to any conclusion about thie before I heard the man's own words. I've got to say I'm not real moved by that appology.

Mr. Gresham- Complain all you want about us eating our own, the truth is that your friend took the first bite! Your first show of the year you talked about how we should plan to buy at least one new gun, mine is going to be a Remmington. http://www.remington.com/library/press/2007/2007-1.asp

I just got a reply to my protest email from Gerber Gear -- here it is:\

Following Jim Zumbo’s recent comments, those of us at Gerber would like to clarify that we respect the opinion of our sponsored hunters and users however, we do not necessarily agree with all their opinions, nor do we endorse their public statements. Our presence and development in the tactical and hunting markets is proof-positive we are committed to supporting these industries and all those involved.

Since Jim’s blog was published he has issued this apology: http://outdoorlife.blogs.com/zumbo/2007/02/i_was_wrong_big.html.

Thanks for supporting our rights and for supporting Gerber Legendary Blades.

Outdoor Life pulled the blog. I just called them, but didn't get far. Someone is supposed to call me back. We'll see how that goes.

Now I understand how the Pharisees managed to whip up the crowd to shout out "crucify him" just a day after the same crowd shouted "Hosanna to the son of David".

If someone could only find a way to harness all the hot air on the internet and use it to generate electricity, we'd have free energy for life. Pollution of a different sort, but free energy just the same.

So Gerber is business as usual? I haven't received a reply from them, but I guess my next multitool won't be a Gerber.

You know, things like AR-15's are assault rifles. Assault rifles are -- without question -- readily used in terroristic (force change through fear, intimidation, force, et al) fashion, including by our military.

Wrong! You are getting confused between a selective fire assault rifle and a so-called "assault weapon."

And you're calling our military terrorists?

I can already imagine suited politicos in offices from NYC to DC from global
gun controlling international NGOs to domestic hacks on the Hill saying a
collective Monty Burns "Excellent!" in unison over this type of internal
squabbling.

No compromise, ppl, NO COMPROMISE on the types of small arms We The People
should be able to own. Don't get caught up on the language --we will lose
that battle.

Statement from Outdoor Life
Due to the controversy surrounding Jim Zumbo’s recent postings, Outdoor Life has decided to discontinue the “Hunting With Zumbo” blog for the time being. Outdoor Life has always been, and will always be, a steadfast supporter of our Second Amendment rights, which do not make distinctions based on the looks of the firearms we choose to own, shoot and take hunting. Please direct any comments you have to [email protected].

For those of you contacting his sponsors, don't assume they are not getting back to you. A lot of them are closed for the Holiday.

Oh come on. You're comparing him to JC now? Give me a break. He's a member of an elite cadre of hunters who get to travel the world and write about it. He tried to put *US* in what he thought was "our place." But this is not 1987. What he thought was a small group of gun nuts who use those "terrorist weapons" actually includes the top brass at Remington. He got his comeupance.

If you really want to go Biblical, don't compare Zumbo's rebuke to the betrayal of Jesus.

If you must, you might try comparing him to Judas, it's likely to be a tad better fit.

Groovski, call me old fashioned but I have to respect Gerber for not running out on an old friend even when he does something stupid and embarassing.

I am hopeful that when the tide of foam and testosterone subsides we can reconnect with Jim and many others that can be allies if we don't just write 'em off. Time will tell.

Rust Collector-

I respect anyone who sticks to their "guns" or friends. People have differences of opinion. I simply choose not to spend my money with companies that associate with someone who preaches that rifles I own are "terrorist rifles."

How about a signature on a "no compromise on the Second Amendment" press release?

Maybe the community did go off on this guy.

But look at what happens when we stand up strong for our rights. I hope this is a lesson--a lesson for gun owners and what happens when they speak in a LOUD voice.

Exactly. But now, we need to "go off" loudly and clearly when it comes to influencing our politicians, to stand up for our rights.

It's been said over and over in this thread: We, as a gun community, need to have this sort of united outcry against anti-gun legislation.

I haven't posted anything yet on the matter of the writer.

Yet, I seem to have come by a strange urge to run out and buy a Remington. The 105Cti seems interesting.

I posted on the original blog and expressed my displeasure. I have re-read the apology and thought about it for quite some time.

I grew up a Catholic, now whatever your opinions on penance are, I am intimatly familiar with it. What we need to see is what happens from here on out. Going on a hunt with an AR-15 is a start to his penance, I want to see further actions in the future. I expect Jim Zumbo to learn from this fiasco, and come out of it a stronger advocate for the RKBA than he has ever been in the past. I applaud everone who jumped on this and I thank Tom Gresham for giving him a chance to explain himself.

But I'm tired of responsible gun owners looking bad because knee-jerk nutjobs feel threatened that someone might bring into floor discussion (not law) a few caveats related to their metallic phalluses.

And, before anyone goes all troglodyte and feels insulted, "ask yourself which group you're in."

It would not be High Road of me to respond appropriately to your post, so I'm not going to. I just want to be sure that others here read what you said. It is not dissimilar to the statements that started this whole mess.

In some situations there is a certain latitude for dissent and conflicting opinion. The fight for the 2nd Amendment is one in which we do not have that luxury. Others have already quoted Franklin, but it bears repeating:
We must hang together gentlemen...else we shall most assuredly hang separately.

His statement is an opinion, it's a perfectly valid (because it is HIS) opinion, and he has a right to have it.

You know, things like AR-15's are assault rifles. Assault rifles are -- without question -- readily used in terroristic (force change through fear, intimidation, force, et al) fashion, including by our military.

Does that make anyone who carries/uses one a terrorist? "Of course not."

Why do some people insist that any opinion is "valid" simply because somebody spouts it? What does "valid" mean in that context? And if any opinion is "valid" (which seems to be the implication) then what is validity worth?

The guns he's talking about simply aren't assault rifles. That is fact. Close, maybe, but they aren't. But that's not the point here. The point is that Zumbo thinks that taking a scary rifle on a hunt is somehow a worse problem than the fact that some Americans are frightened by the idea of their fellow citizens having military weapons.
