Zumbo: Gun rag writer trashes "Assault Weapons"

What this will do, one hopes, is cause a writer, be it for a primarily hunting magazine of a shooting magazine or combination thereof, to stop and think and do further research before putting pen to paper.

Hopefully they realize that there is more to it, than their narrow interpretation or particular field of interest and that WORDS have power and a slip of the tongue (so to speak) can have wide ranging and detrimental consequences for more than just the few referenced in the article.

The people interested in taking away our firearms (all types) are dancing gleefully around the room, waving their copies of Jim Zumbo's blog and saying to those who maybe had a doubt...."See! here is a renowned writer in the field of hunting who agree's that assault rifles are not hunting rifles"....this hurt us and only time will tell how much, but with the push to reinstate the AWB, this couldn't have come at a worse time.

I think he should be made an example of and if that sounds overly harsh or cruel and unforgiving, think about his comments and how they made many of us feel...we expect this kind of crap from the Gun Grabbers, not from our own.

To whom much is given, much is expected. Mr. Zumbo may be the quintessential hunter. He has been blessed with the ability to make a living doing what he loves; hunting. For him to make the claims that he has, is just intolerable. He, of all people should know that the appearance of a firearm has nothing to do with it's utility. A semi automatic, bolt action, pump, lever action, single shot et al are merely variations of a tool. The usefulness of a firearm as a tool is multifaceted; more for good than evil actually.

Criminals and terrorists are what they are. The fact that they use firearms to perpetrate their evil does not and should not, by extension, label those who are not criminals or terrorists because we posses certain types of firearms. The object does not make the terrorist.

That is why his comments are so offensive to every law abiding gun owner of all stripes. He has by extension, painted those of us who possess any type of weapon we choose for whatever reason, as terrorists and criminals merely because of the way our firearms look. In addition to this, he has given ammunition for anti's to use and twist to their own purposes. Sadly those purposes infringes upon our constitutional freedoms.

Mr. Zumbo has been given much by the firearm community because of our support for his reportage on hunting. Much should be expected from him in return for his slander of his fellow Americans whose only sin is to cherish our freedoms which are granted by the Almighty and confirmed by our Constitution.

Maybe the community did go off on this guy.
But look at what happens when we stand up strong for our rights.

What happens is that the publishers and manufacturers who make money off firearm sales and promotions make a sacrificial lamb out of their old "friend" to keep the gravy train rolling.

I suspect there will be very little affect on the political scene. Unless you're able to find and fund a candidate who is a RKBA supporter...AND...that is willing to go public that the 2nd amendment acts as a check on oppressive government by ensuring the masses governed are equipped for the purpose of revolution.

And if you can find and fund this candidate, you'll barely have time to flinch, before you see the press marginalize him (or her).....just as quickly as this forum just trashed Mr. Zumbo

Oh come on. You're comparing him to JC now? Give me a break.

I will never in my life compare a mortal man to the Son of the Most High God....

it is to those venting their anger without thoughtfulness and common courtesy (and apparently lacking in higher powers of perception) that I compare the chanting crowd.

Mr. Zumbo failed to see that the 2nd amendment has very, very little to do with sport and much, much to do with freedom.

He should be debated, educated and corrected. And if not open to correction, ignored.

SSN Vet, I'd be the first to agree with you if Zumbo had merely said something in passing about how he saw no need for the scary guns for hunting. In that case the approach you suggest would have been appropriate. But he did far more than that. He called for the "assault weapons" to be banned from hunting and insinuated anyone who used them was a terrorist! My mouth was hanging open when I read and re-read the blog. I still can hardly believe anyone with any ties to the industry could be so amazingly out of touch. He was spouting VPC rhetoric! Right as the AWB is heading back to a Democrat controlled committee for renewal!!

When a major, well-known hunter with lots of media available to him spouts off in this manner, we cannot take the chance that a polite conversation might be enough to stop him. He has become the enemy, and must be driven from his position.

Concerning Zumbo's apology, I think our own LawDog put it quite succinctly on his blog:
Nothing like slamming that ol' barn door as you listen to the fading thunder of horses hooves...

(Read the full blog entry http://thelawdogfiles.blogspot.com/ dated February 18, 2007.)

Call me sadistic, but in my mind's eye I picture Zumbo sitting on the floor with that cartoon white cloud above him indicating that he is thinking, "What just happened?!"

Zumbo has been disenfranchised by Outdoor Life and Remington as of the time on this post. When you become so full of yourself that you think you are the final word on something, it is time to be very wary. Even though he apologized, I, for one, think the end results are justified. His apology reminds me of the one Dan Rather aired in a very sad attempt to save his career. The career, in both cases, was the only thing prompting the apologies.

He has no idea the harm he has done to the Second Amendment and gun owners all over America. Let him boil in his own juice.

The problem is, they are not "our" leaders. The troublemakers come from solid blue territory and do not represent any of us. They don't give a wetslap what we think, or what the small minority of people in their states or districts who own firearms think.

Where we can make the biggest difference is in destroying any efforts by antis such as "America's Mayor" to capture the GOP nomination.

Am I to assume we will see the same level of savagery directed toward prominent congressional leaders next time one of them proposes banning cop-killing, centerfire, long-gun ammunition?
One can only hope...

But beyond your question, when a once respected member of the gun community assaults a cross section of the same community his actions warrant savagery. Everyone is due the benefit of the doubt, but his "apology" was as lame as his initial blog posting. He is through.

Sorry, I view this as treacherous, a treason to our cause, and I don't like to be called a terrorist.

Remington did what was right, and we'll see if Outdoor Life does.

The furor created by the response from Zumbro's Blog so far has cost him the Sponsorship from Remington, his Blog and possibly future articles in O/L and yet people want more? This has all happened since this thread started on the 17th.
20 freaking pages calling for his blood, his first born, and other body parts figuratively. Can we back off now or do we want to ridicule his seed for the next 10 generations too?
How Many of you have emailed a Congressioal Representative regarding HR 1022? That is the real battle not skewering Zumbro, with the reaction I think he will get the message, Will your Representaitve?

Statement from Outdoor Life
Due to the controversy surrounding Jim Zumbo’s recent postings, Outdoor Life has decided to discontinue the “Hunting With Zumbo” blog for the time being. Outdoor Life has always been, and will always be, a steadfast supporter of our Second Amendment rights, which do not make distinctions based on the looks of the firearms we choose to own, shoot and take hunting. Please direct any comments you have to [email protected].

"We'll re-affirm to our subscribers that we're still the good guys and Zumbo is wrong."

The opinions of our bloggers do not necessarily represent those of Outdoor Life or its sponsors.

"Thanks for taking the time to comment, even though we don't really care about your comment"

Exactly.

BTW, I've done so.

Hi-Mountain also severed their ties. Received a lame response from Gerber (to which I politely replied). I'll enjoy snacking on jerky while I'm dialing-in my next Remington.

I appreciate your prompt response & have previously read Jim Zumbo's cya attempt at an apology. It's a start, albeit a poor effort in my humble opinion, but until I see more, as long as you folks continue to support him, I will continue to avoid any future relationship with Gerber. You might tactfully suggest he do more . . . specifically apologizing for his derogatory reference to "terrorist rifles" would be a better step forward and a statement resenting the anti-gun groups' present use of his ill-worded & harmful blog entry would be even better. Until Mr Zumbo does more, I view him as an undesirable representative of Gerber products. Remington took decisive action, so I will continue to use Remington products. When it comes to 2nd Amendment rights, there is no middle ground & while in this great country one is entitled to express their opinion, when one in a respected position does so in such a careless & damaging manner, it cannot be tolerated. Considering that your "presence and development in the tactical and hunting markets is proof-positive we are committed to supporting these industries and all those involved," I find it incomprehensible that Gerber can continue to "respect the opinion of "this" sponsored hunter."
Thank you again for your response.

Isn't DHS

(and FBI and all the other agencies) interested in people who advocate infringing our constitutional rights?

Likewise . . . last week.

So now the tide seems to be turning a bit....I see we're supposed to let up on people who call us terrrorists, call for the banning of our weapons, and seek to divide us.

20 pages of vitriol isn't enough, Zumbo has not paid yet a price satisfactory for his outburst, and I'm not going to play nice because he's being piled on. The reason this strikes at us is because it was one of our own that plunged the knife in our back - not a sleazy self-serving politician.

Get a clue.

What is "the high road" for a writer who doesn't think we "need" [name of scary looking gun here] ? I was fortunate enough to read his remarks en situ before Outdoor Life removed them. It is clear what he thinks of modern rifles and the people who own them. If he has stabbed us in the back, are we wrong for admitting such?

I think the gunguys.com or the AHSA should contact Zumbo as he believes pretty much what they believe. Anyone who would own a scary looking gun is a terrorist. Now, Zumbro and gunguys disagree and what "looks scary", but in principle they have both put into writing the same idea.

Guys, You have no Idea what kind of tool and power we have here. Some of you will remember "Aussieseek" Yes it was Australian but... It was a group on there that was called "Gunsafe" they were from New Zealand" but there founder was in Sydney Australia and had ties to Becky Peters who is now living on American soil. Her goal is to bring Aussie style gun control to America. She is doing this on Soros dime. When a group of us needed muscle, we brought it here. Sometimes it amazed me the response.
That site is now a ghost town. It took us a year to figure the in's and out's. but we did it.It was for real and for keeps.
I have moved on but I would like to say. The anti gun groups are International. There are many who would love to see us disarmed.
I work everyday on 2A issues. I want to thank the guys here. When there is an issue. They are the ones we on the front can count on.
How does this tie into the Zumbo thing? Well, What he said was just unbelievable and this is going to be hard to get past.
In a way it might be a good thing for our cause. It will unite the sportshooters and the Hunters. I say this because I came through the shooting community through the hunting ranks. My father taught me how to hunt, Respect the outdoors and all the ethical things but not the 2A part.
When The first ban was In place, I felt like It didn't effect me. Oh but it did.
I saw the other side at its worst. that is what turned me. I am also a military arms collector.
Hopefully some good will come out of the Zumbo blunder. unite us.
Personally, Anybody here who knows me, Knows that I volunteer massive amounts of time to our cause. So none of this is said lightly.
I volunteer my time at the local range, I belong to the local gun rights group. I sit in a booth at gunshows and hand out literature.
You can make a difference. If it is no more than volunteering one weekend to an anti gun politician's opponent, Putting out campaign signs. It doesn't even have to be in your district.

Zumbo, He is done.

Did so, last week and again today.

Emailed/Faxed/Snail Mailed/made appointment to see in person....Short of running for Government, not much more I can do :D

Is that sufficient? or Should I run for Government:neener:

I'm a traditionalist

I'm a traditionalist, yes them black plastic firearms are an insult.

People should be using wood and steel firearms like M1 Garands, M1As, 1903a3s, BARs, Enfields, Mausers, and all those other 10 to 20 pound firearms in the .30 caliber, 7mm and 8mm. Hump a real firearm through the woods for a day. These wood and steel firearms are my choice over that little aluminum and plastic toy, so nomatter what you choose, I must be right.

:neener: :banghead:

We need to focus on Brady 2

Whew.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I agree that Mr. Zumbo was wrong on all counts, but ain't this hoss been just about whipped to death?

I don't like the way OUTDOOR LIFE pretty much blew us off. I don't think it should be over until he is no longer employed by them.

I am going to start e-mailing ODL advertisers.
