Reloading mistakes

I think I can get them all in one post.

I double sized a 30-30 in a 223 die, primed before trimming, punched out the primer to trim, added powder before re-priming, re-primed and forgot the powder, got a bullet to seat, had to unseat it to add powder, then seated the correct bullet only to find it wouldn’t seat now. After all that, it didn’t matter. It wouldn’t chamber anyway.

Loaded .357 in a .38 case today! That doesn’t look right! Bet it would shoot! 😂
That's actually pretty normal. Seating to the correct depth just makes it a .357Mag with not as much neck tension.

I’m also pretty sure this is the beginning of a new topic: What makes a .357 not a .38? OAL, CL, or Powder column space? Might want to not derail this one.

There's more than a few for me over the last 30+yrs.....the most recent....I ran 100 40s last week. Went thru, set every station on the die block, made a dummy too.....but the dummy operating the digital calipers forgotted to close the jaws and push ZERO before he measured said dummy. After about 35 or so I got to thinking that looks a bit longer then 1.115, and it was by about .120.
Won the prestigious Lamont Sanford trophy for that one that day

One more, decapping a batch of .44 Rem Mag brass one of the ‘spent’ primers didn’t go down the tube with the rest. When I picked it up I broke into a sweat. I was grabbing from the wrong bin and was decapping live primers from a batch of prepped brass. I was really going to town, but nothing popped.
1. Have only the cases you are working on within your grasp.
2. Wear your safety glasses.

The kinds of mistakes I make are particular to my odd taste in cartridges and guns. I loaded Speer 148gr. HBWC’s for a .38 S&W Webley and failed to read my own notes correctly, Instead of using the first lube groove from the BOTTOM as a crimp groove, I used the first lube groove from the TOP. It only took me two rounds to discover my mistake but by then there was a skirt lodged in the forcing cone and the action was locked tight as a drum. It was an easy fix but I felt both stupid and lucky. Not my first time for either.

I don’t know how many people can learn from that mistake but hopefully I have. ;)

I thought about it… very simple solution, Load hot .38 and shoot it out of a .357!

same bullet, same powder, just use the cheaper .38 brass
If your seating to the crimp grove mind the case volume reduction. This was the way before there ever was a .357. I don't recommend just using old loads though. Model them in grt and start in a sane range.

So before .357 mag, people loaded .38 long and stout? interesting

Before 357 mag was 38-44. In an effort to make it idiot proof they made the case longer so the high pressure case would not fit in a gun rated for half the pressure. A chamber is rated for a pressure, and available volume dictates load. From modern 38sc to 357 every case can be loaded to 35kpsi. It removes the saftey factor of length to prevent usage but current 38sc will be just as bad as a 357 in a 38 chamber.

I an’t going to mess with it. I have been known to “Screw it Up”

.38 Gun shoots .38 Normal
.357 Guns shoots hot .38 and .357

sounds good to me
