In general, most of the Makarov variants have a reputation for rugged reliability with no frills.

From my understanding, the Bulgarian Makarov is essentially middle-of-the-road: not particularly any better or worse than others.

The only Makarov that I believe stands out are those from former East Germany. I'm told they are more refined and have the nicest triggers of the breed.

I like the P64 Radom (not a Makarov, but shoots 9x18) for carry. It's very accurate, too, as the Maks I've fired are. This are all rugged, nice little guns. The CZ82 is neat, would like to pick one up sometime.

There are no Czech Makarov PMs. Maybe you're referring to the CZs chambered in 9x18 Mak.

I also carry the Polish Radom P64 on occasion and completely concur. They are not what I would consider pleasant to shoot, so I wouldn't recommend them to anyone looking for a range toy. However, they are astonishingly accurate (possibly due to the great SA trigger and fixed barrel), quite concealable and I have yet to experience any malfunction of any kind.

If you find yourself liking the 9x18 cartridge, you should consider a C&R permit as both the Polish P64 and the Czech CZ-82 (another wonderful pistol) are C&R eligible.

I put my Maks in the following order for fit and finish...
East German
Bulgarian
Russian military
Chinese

All have been 100% reliable. My Bulgarian is very nice, and just a hair below the EG in fit and finish. The Chinese is noticeably rougher than the rest, and has the worst trigger by far.

Having looked at few I would say it is the best Pistolet Makorava for $ spent. I would look for one in top shape with brown bakelite grip.

The EGs are better. I have both Bulgie and EG.

BUT, I'd not hesitate to use the Bulgie.

The Chinese are the worst. Finish is rather poor. The Russians are good but not quite to the EG standards.

But they all will go bang fine.

And the Bulgies are very serviceable. I use mine for a fun gun. The EG sleeps.
