Impulse buy: Springfield xd

Did the same thing 2 yrs ago. Walked in empty, came out with a used XD-45 Tactical. I really like this gun. Its very accurate and even shoots the cheap stuff (if there is such a thing as cheap 45 ACP these days). It's become my nightstand buddy. In fact, I'm looking at it now. Congrats on your purchase. DirtyDiesel: My Son shoots a 5 in 45 XD and I shoot a 4in 45 XD. We both really like these Guns. We use them for just about everything from 3 Gun to just plinking. We have had them fot several years and shot them alot and never had any kind of a problem. Mine sit`s on the my night stand and at night I put a light on it. I have always been a 1911 fan and I still am but I like my XD and I really like the 13 rounds of 45 ACP it carries.

I have an XD45 4" Service model with thumb safety. Excellent gun with excellent accuracy. The only thing I would caution you on is if you're right handed and you use the thumbs forward grip to watch out for the disassembly lever. It sticks out from the gun and has a very blunt squared off end that will beat the crap out of your thumb. Love the gun, one of my favorite 45's.

Not with that particular model (although it's been on my wish list for a while).
My main CCW was an XDSC40 (pre-Melonite), but when they redesigned the XDSC9 magazine to hold more than 10 rounds, it replaced my 40 as my daily carry.

Both have worked like a champ - I've offered them up as options to a number of newbie friends that have gotten serious about SD over the last few years, and I have yet to hear of one complain or get rid of it.

I never tell 'em to "get one" - I usually offer it up as a baseline for comparison shopping. I think every one of them has ended up with an XD after doing their research / shopping.

I think you're going to enjoy it. I've met lots of Springfield XD owners and I own two XDM pistols. They're excellent quality guns at a reasonably competetive price.

I have 2 4" XD-45's and they are great guns! I might have to get another one!

One is a Compact but both hold th 13rd mags:

I can't say that the match barrel offers any improvement but the ability to change the backstrap thickness is a plus to those wishing to change how much the grip fills their hand. And the grip texture is a bit more aggressive on the XDm which some folks like.

Functionally they're the same and the XD line of pistols has a wonderful frame geometry that most folks I've spoken with that have actually shot them really like.

Got mine the day before xmas. Felt good in my hand, and after seeing the bright yellow sticker "Not Legal In California" I had to have it.

Mine has the shortened grip, that accepts both 10 and 13 round magazines.

I was looking at the xd(m) and they seemed similar but price tag on the M was considerably more expensive...is that just for the match barrel that it comes with?

As a long time owner, I consider the M line to be mostly marketing.
One of the things that impressed me with my older models was how accurate they are (all my friends report the same). I laughingly told my CHP instructor this was the first 40 I'd owned and I had never owned this powerful a caliber in a size this small, so I had no idea what to expect. First shot was on center, 6 o'clock low. I walked 'em up the target and put 'em all in the center after getting a feel for the gun.
I don't know how much more accurate you really need a self defense gun to be?

Looks are subjective (I still like the older models), the match grade barrel is pretty much marketing, and the interchangeable backstraps I don't need as the old models fit me well as is.

If you do decide to someday go with an M model, do your homework.
If I remember, the M model will not accept magazines from the older models?

Anywho...I'm sure you'll enjoy your new gun.
The local gun shop seems to have a decent supply of Springfields on hand - I hear Springfield is one of the few companies that has been able to keep up with supply.
With the current political climate, I keep looking wistfully at 'em in the case, but at this time I really don't need another one.

'Course, the guys at the shop repeatedly tell me "we don't operate on a needs basis"! :banghead:

Congratulations, I don't think you will be disappointed! I have an XD-40 that I purchased in 2009 that has 1100 rounds through it and has performed flawlessly. I fits my hand like a glove and is accurate to boot. Happy shooting!

Iff'n you ever decide to put night sights on it, do your research!

Easiest, quickest, neatest way for me was to mail the slide off.

XD sights can be a real bear to remove!

I have owned three XD pistols and one XDm. They are my duty pistols, and have NEVER let me down. I only left the 1911 relm becuase the XD has a rail. It takes a lot to get one away from the venerable 1911.

It'll take yet another breakthrough to get me to switch over to something else.

Only bad thing I've heard 'bout some XDs is breaking of the firing pin retainer if you dry fire a lot.

There are folks that sell multi-packs of replacement pins (wrapped instead of rolled), and I always meant to get around to ordering some, but I don't dry fire my XD that much - I also wonder just how much of a problem it really is?

Well, I did hear some mention made of folks getting it wrong when reassembling and having to "beat" the slide off, or send it to Springfield.
Again, I don't know how much of a problem that really is, and by their own admission, they did something incorrectly when reassembling.

Exactly.
Being a long time Glock & 1911 liker/user, the XD has proven to me in the last three years, that there is another real option.

I am an XD/XDM afficiando, and have never heard of having to "beat a slide off" of anything.

You just haven't dug deep enough - I've seen multiple reports of it, but how many of 'em were just XD haters and how many of 'em actually put it together incorrectly I can't tell ya.

I'll worry 'bout it next time I put mine together incorrectly.

Strange...I read a few of the first hits my Google search brought up, and they all carried me to the XDtalk.com forums...

Then again, I wouldn’t describe myself as an aficionado, I don't love my guns, yadda yadda yadda.

I'm a pragmatist…which (for some reason) does seem to really PO a lot of folks these days...
