    Can you identify this rifle?

When I get around to trying it I'll give a report. As for the bore, a quick look down it today seems pretty clean.

    Can you identify this rifle?

Okay, so I just measured the bore with a caliper and it measures 7mm, not 7.62. I guess it wasn't re-barreled and is an original 7x57 Mauser.

    Can you identify this rifle?

My father purchased it and was told it was a 7mm, then 7.62, but the guy couldn't really tell him what it was the seller (third party) was shooting out of it. I suspect it is a Chilean re-barreled Mauser in 7.62 x 51mm, but there is no designation on the barrel.

Any suggestions for a small flashlight?

I'm a big fan of Fenix lights like several others above, but I also have a Terralux Lightstar 220, which runs on two AA batteries. It has two brightness levels topping out at 220 lumens, but there are 190 and 300 lumen models as well, I believe.

    Media's pet phrase: "Gun Culture"?

From Saul Alinsky's Rules for Radicals: If you are not familiar with these rules, you need to be in order to recognize them when they are employed.

possible ar purchase need opinions please

Like you, I've been wanting one for a while now, trying to talk myself into it all year. Unfortunately, I'm a cheap SOB, and I've spent most of my expendable income getting back into tennis over the last couple of years. Being sufficiently stocked in handguns and shotguns, and with access to...

    Self defense in college

Somewhere recently I read a suggestion to carry a sturdy, plastic pen with a removable cap. The pen is worn around the neck with a cord through the clip on the cap. More accessible than anything carried in your pocket, and more effective than poking them with your fingers. A pen like this...

    Speedway is anti gun

I received this reply: Somewhat different from the response in the OP, which I assumed was in reference to a store in KY. This response references OH, so I am considering requesting clarification, as I am in KY.

    Speedway is anti gun

Thanks for pointing that out. While the sign carries no legal weight in KY, they will receive no more of my business and I will not have to waste my time stopping there. edited to add: Have sent and email asking if this is true. Will report any response.

    KY carry restrictions?

I'm pretty sure there are no specific requirements on signage for posted privately owned establishments, but they do not carry any legal penalty either. You can only be asked to leave and cited with trespass if you refuse to comply. I believe requirements were passed a few years ago...

    KY carry restrictions?

These seem to be presented as restricted areas in your post, though the site referenced indicates otherwise for rest stops, state parks, and state forests. The Land Between the Lakes Recreational Area is, I believe, administered under the National Parks, which may account for the restrictions...

    Bud's Gun Shop

I've bought a couple of guns from them directly, at their Paris location, and been quite satisfied with the experience. I've never bought online and had anything shipped, though. It's nice to have them just a couple of hours away. Oh, and I've never had any trouble reaching them on the phone...

    Win 30-30 for rural defense?

Okay, it seems as if there is general approval of the .30-30 for defense, though it might not be ideal. What about ammo selection? This discussion recommends Federal 125 grain hollowpoints. Anyone else with an opinion?

Do you like Dick's Sporting Goods?

The closest Dick's is in Lexington, KY, and I have visited both stores there. They seem to be pretty decent sports stores if you are into golf (I'm not), tennis, or a myriad of other athletic activities, but very mediocre for the hunting/fishing crowd. Absolutely worthless for the non-hunting...

    Taurus 85SS2UL Trigger Job

I put snap caps in mine and spent a couple of evenings shooting the television. It seemed to improve the double action pull quite a bit. Given the news these days, it might help relieve some personal stress too.

    looking for a light recommendation...

I just spent three days without electricity, and the main workhorse for me was an old two D-cell MagLite with an LED bulb replacement. It probably spent nearly thirty hours on, using batteries placed in it almost two years ago, and is still going. Perhaps even more useful was the Gerber LED...

    looking for a light recommendation...

I bought this UltraFire A40 from this supplier. It has high (220 lumens), medium, and low, plus two strobe settings, in a very compact package. And for less than $14. I haven't had it long enough to offer a thumbs up or thumbs down yet, but I am hopeful. It may be worth your time to look at...

    Attempted break in thwarted

I think that in a situation such as this, it is important to let the burglar know that the apartment/home/etc. that he thought was unoccupied was, in fact, not. This can be done either verbally or by turning on a light. If he made an attempt to determine this, as he apparently did in this...
