Anybody know if firing 00 buck through a rifled barrel is a good idea? I'm guessing it would be more accurate, but what about pattern, or barrel damage.

Doesn't work. Rifled barrels are for slugs, and mostly sabots at that.

And, cleaning lead out of those lands and grooves can be onerous.

Good idea? Depends on why you're doing it. No need to worry about barrel damage, the soft lead and thin copper plateing that makes up most if not all 00 won't hurt a thing. The pattern does open at a rapid rate! I did some tests with S&B 00 and found that at 21 feet the pattern would cover the chest of a standard target. This was from a Mossberg 500 with a 24" rifled slug barrel.

Back to the good idea question. If all you have for HD is a slug barreled shotgun go ahead and use it with 00. Just remember your max range will be about 21'. The plus side of it is it should be easier to get a hit on the target and the shot string is opened very quickly. That would reduce the chance of the shot charge blowing a fist size hole in the wall and going out the other side ( even a bigger problem if slugs are used). The down side is a VERY limited range and the need for the bad guy/ target to be the only thing you can/want to hit in front of you.

"...the shot string is opened very quickly..." No string at all. You get sprialling shot that can go anywhere. Same as you do firing shotshells out of a handgun. Won'thurt anything. Just won't be accurate enough for hunting.

Anyone do any pattern testing at less than 7 yards with buckshot and rifled barrel?

I have thought more than once about keeping rifle shotgun in trunk with couple of shot loads for use when staying in hotel or such (ie lower penetration).

HEY GLAMDRING !!!

S&W 24 the elder has a rifled 870 barrel you can shoot it all you want if you clean it.

Sounds like a plan, remind me to discuss ideas for winter course of fire with you.

I know that we're talking about "twist rifled" barrels here, but...

I recall an acquaintance telling me that he had excellent results with both bird shot and buckshot from a "straight rifled" SG Barrel.

I'd be lying if I said that I remember the mfgr. of the barrel, but the results were pretty solid.

Anyone know of the maker I'm referring to?

Squibload,
I am sure you are refering to the Hastings Wadlock II straight rifled barrel. I shoot on on my Browning A5, with great results. This handles buckshot,(Single O works best for me) as well as birdshot. The straight rifling is supposed to stop the twist of the wad, and produces great patterns.
