have an immaculate colt safe queen 1911 government model serial #C156XX reportedly dating to 1928. no sign of firing or wear. owner interested in value, possible sale. appreciate opinion of sale price,

Something like that is always difficult to put a value to. It's basically worth what someone is willing to pay for it. It will be worth more to some than others. Colt collectors may be willing to pay more than "book value" or they may not. I know I'm not much help, but old guns are just really hard to value.

Maybe some of the die hard Colt fanatics will be able to give you a better idea. You can always post this over at the Colt forum too. Sorry I couldn't be more help.

Does it have any history to it that you can prove (ie. document)? For example, was it ever issued to or sold to someone famous (of infamous, as the case may be). From the little information you provided, it's really impossible to say - might be worth a grand or two, or ten, depending on the detailed condition and/or history of the gun.

Search for "Colt 1911" on www.gunsinternational.com and you'll see prices for old 1911's going from the hundreds to, sometimes many thousands of dollars.
